The joy of living with cats (they train us well). Have you tried leaving the keyboard onto of the desktop when your away, Mindblower!

Just a suggestion here, have you tried calibrating the color for the computer? If not you could try these steps;

Right click the desktop
Click Personalize
Click Display (bottom left side of window under "See Also"
Click Calibrate Color top left
Follow the instructions and see if it helps.

And any chance of a screenshot of your icons to see exactly what you are talking about?

My cat has me trained well. She can sleep wherever she wants.
New icons are not affected.
See attached.

Somehow under Properties/General/Attributes the "Hidden" option was selected. Unchecking that fixes the problem. As I see it I will have to do that for each individual icon....yuk

You might also go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View Tab and see what the settings are. This is my settings with W8.1.

Cats and keyboards are not an ideal combination, however I have profited from that strange association.
The most common ailment is missing keyboard keys. Ever tried removing a cat from its place of slumber? It usually insists on taking with it every grabable object within reach of its myriad claws, therefore lifting a sleeping cat off a defenceless keyboard is a dangerous operation. The cat should be enticed away with a saucer of milk and be allowed to retire gracefully, thus not extending its claws.

dandl,
Even though individual icon properties had "hidden" selected The control panel/folder options had "show hidden" selected. I was able to control click all affected icons and change with one click.

Marc,
Best to let sleeping cats lie.......

Better put away the mouse too, maybe that's what attracted the cat in the first place. LOLWink
