Hi All - Looking for simple, easy to use freeware to cut parts of video....mostly beginning and/or end.
It's for my daughter so must be [i:1fj6boyy]very[/i:1fj6boyy] easy to use.....LOL
Would prefer if it was a stand-alone [not complicated full editor/converter], and better if portable.
VirtualDub will do it pretty simply, but VD doesn't support enough video and audio formats.....often requires full re-encode.
She is mainly working with Xvid/DivX video and MP3/AC3 audio.
Any recommendations gratefully received,

Movie Maker?
If not there was free software from Avid, a very well known video software company, called FreeDV. It isn't developed anymore, but you can still find downloads. http://en.kioskea.net/download/download ... id-free-dv
The only open source I've heard anyone using is Jahshaka, recently renamed to CineFX - http://www.cinefx.org/downloads/.

Wooo....outside of Adobe Premiere and Windows Movie Maker I've never actually used video editing software. :/
But now I'm interested in the answer.....

Guys, Windows Movie Maker will cut segments of video okay but the results cannot be saved in the original format....it is compulsorily re-encoded. Choices are: for high definition display, for computer, burn a DVD, for email, for mobile devices. No option to save edited video to original format.

Dave, neither of those suit...sorry.
What I am looking for is a simple video editing tool just for cutting video. Both those titles you linked to are for full suites. I expect some type of cutting feature would be included but she doesn't need all that extra baggage.

UPDATE:
I think I might have found one that will suit, it's called Machete Video Editor Lite. It will edit video files losslessly so they should not require re-encoding.

If she wants to edit (i.e., cut) she's gonna need a suite. Why? Well the suites have the ability to handle multiple formats and you have to worry about not only the input ability, but also the ability to output. Most non-suites of this type handle multiple in's and only one out (or limited). There is also less change of transcoding with a suite and if the suite offers in/out for the format(s) in question the chances of encoding on the output side are greatly reduced. I mean it may be a simple rewrite of the container file.
Most are drag and drop. Drag the video into the window, move the pointers on the timeline and export.

As I said in the OP mate, she is working mainly with Xvid/Divx, so as long at the software supports that format she is sweet. Machete supports all formats for the AVI container.

You are sort of right Dave. Many of these programs use a system of re-encoding where the user needs to select a format for the output file, in that case a wide choice of output formats would be imperative. Some however (such as Machete) use a system of lossless editing which means the video does not need re-encoding and the edited file will be saved in the same format as the original. So, whatever the software supports as input is also supported as output. It is that lossless system [no need for re-encoding] which is difficult to come by in freeware.
At least, that is my understanding of the process. If I am wrong [which I often am] then I will stand corrected.

That's kind of what I was trying to get at...
Basically if she want's that functionality in freeware she's going to have to look at one of those suites. Once she has one it is pretty simple to cut/output a file and as long as she chooses the same format/container it should be a fairly fast action as I think only the container needs to be rewritten and not the inner video file.

Yep, that's right mate.
I knew it was going to be difficult to find a simple[i:37dek7a5] free[/i:37dek7a5] program for lossless editing but she already has a program which will allow her to edit [cut] video and re-encode. What she is trying to do is produce slightly smaller files so she can fit more of them on a flash drive. Even though the video has been cut, the re-encoding process often produces an output file which is at least equal to the original file size and often larger.
If however, she can edit losslessly [without re-encoding] then she should end up with the smaller files she is after.
She is going to let me know how she gets on with the Machete freeware.

Heard back from the daughter. The Machete software worked a treat and she is chuffed to bits.

Recommend Joyoshare Media Cutter that I'm using now. Very easy to use, anyone can operate it without spending too much time learning it. It offers basic editing features such as cutting, trimming, splitting, cropping, joining, etc. with high quallity retained. Suitable for some newbies.
