Windows 11 users will notice an optional update (KB5120998) awaiting action in Windows Update:
This update delivers several long-awaited improvements, including a movable Taskbar, a resizable Start menu, and a revamped Search box. However, there are also reports of 2 bugs that appear to be widespread:
- The mouse pointer is resetting to a large, white cursor that cannot be changed
- Desktop background customization is being removed and replaced with a solid black background
Users are reporting that, in both cases, uninstalling KB5120998 has resolved these issues.
BOTTOM LINE:
As much as you might be tempted to install update KB5120998, my advice would be to give it a miss and wait for the September Patch Tuesday update.
The three major improvements – moveable Taskbar, resizable Start menu, and revamped Search box – will all be included in the September 2026 Patch Tuesday update, by which time Microsoft should have resolved these issues.

Thanks for the tip Jim. I prefer using WAU as it gives the user the option of selecting what to enable. So far KB5120998 is Not listed. Not sure when I will check the Windows update. Wonder if I’m putting too much trust using WAU manager to deliver critical patches, Mindblower!
