You may remember my June 3 article How GTA VI Is Impacting Upcoming Game Releases where I said that the game is set to be the biggest entertainment event of the decade, and I wasn’t wrong. Although Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t published any figures, reports suggest that when pre-orders for the game began on June 25, those pre-orders were around $1B. Bear in mind that the November 19 release date is for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only, and priced at $80 and $100. When you take into account that over 90 million PS5s and over 30 million Xbox Series X have been sold, this figure is entirely feasible. It would also suggest that the game’s production cost would be exceeded by those pre-orders, and other reports are suggesting that pre-orders have now reached $3B, but then, that’s the internet for you.
The Physical Disc Joke!
“Physical (Code-in-Box) Version Available.”
The physical box edition, available in retail stores and direct at Rockstar, will NOT contain a Blu-Ray disc but instead a digital download voucher code because the jewel case is for display purposes only, but it’s not clear if you take the box home with you, and it won’t be available until November 12. Many will be disappointed by the lack of a disc, but sadly, this is the future. In fact, Sony/PlayStation recently announced that physical discs will no longer be produced for games released after January 2028. Frankly, I see little point in buying a case with a number printed inside, which would be akin to buying War and Peace filled with blank pages.
Would You Part With $100 And Wait Six Months?
Well, not quite six months, but you get the drift. Rockstar won’t run out of digital keys, so why not wait until November? I know I would, but then we PC gamers will probably have to wait until 2028, by which time Rockstar gets another bite of the cherry. I’m definitely in the wrong business!
