Sandboxie 4.02 – Now with Full 64-bit Support!!

I have written about and recommended Sandboxie many times, in my opinion it is one of the ‘must have’ programs of all time.  Sandboxie provides the user with a virtual environment (sandbox) in which to test software and browse securely – any program/file can be run safely and securely from within Sandboxie.  You can read more about Sandboxie and how it works here: Sandboxie: Why everyone should be using it.

Up until now, Sandboxie has not included full protection for 64-bit systems – previous Sandboxie versions offered an ‘Experimental Protection’ feature for 64-bit systems which used semi-official kernel interfaces to help mitigate the deficiency – that has all changed with the release of the latest version 4.02 on 17th June.

Windows 64-bit: Fully supported without qualifications since version 4.02.

This is excellent news for all 64-bit users but particularly so for Windows 8 64-bit users who were not even offered the ‘Experimental Protection’ feature in previous versions. The full change log for Sandboxie version 4.02 reads as follows:

  • Full protection is offered on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. The Experimental Protection feature, which enabled full protection on 64-bit Windows, is no longer needed, and was removed.
  • Improved compatibility with avast!, Driver Verifier, EMET, F-Secure, KeyScrambler, Lingoes, Listary, Norton Internet Security, Office 2013, PGP, Proxifier, ProxyCap, Solid Converter PDF, Windows 8.
  • Removed support for Windows 2000. Service Pack 3 is required for use on Windows XP.

Sandboxie is available free for personal use but an additional couple of features can be activated by registering the product and paying an associated fee. The installer includes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, existing users can upgrade from within the program and simply overwrite the previous version: Open Sandboxie Control and go to Help>Check For Updates.

  1. I’m a long time user of Sandboxie. Not only is it great for protection during browsing, but I have numerous sandboxes I use to test software that I have downloaded into them. Helps keep my system clean. If I don’t like the test software, then I empty the sandbox and every trace of that software is gone.

Having said that, I’m going to wait (wisely so I think) before upgrading to 4.02. A check of their forum seems to indicate a fairly large number of problems being reported. tzuk, the developer of Sandboxie, is good at staying on top of these issues. But, I’m going to wait until the dust settles a bit before giving 4.02 a go.

  2. When i went to download Sandboxie my McAffe virus software said .warning dangerous site. ???
