I've performed many a repair installation in that exact same manner, all with XP and never any issues. Guess I have been lucky then.
I would definitely try the additional internal HDD. If you have a spare 3.5" external drive, you could remove that from its enclosure and connect internally - would just require the cable, from drive to mobo.
