AmneziaVPN: An Undetectable VPN

AmneziaVPN is a relatively new service that utilizes its own open-source AmneziaWG protocol, which closely mimics normal/standard traffic, making it virtually undetectable.

The problem with most VPNs is that their characteristic patterns make them readily identifiable via DPI (Deep Packet Inspection). In contrast, AmneziaWG utilizes constantly changing headers and packet sizes, which drastically reduces the likelihood of traffic being identified as emanating via a VPN.

Indeed, the AmneziaWG protocol is so far advanced that it is now being adopted by other VPNs.

Amnezia Free VPN

Amnezia’s free VPN only works with geo-blocked websites in specific countries. There are several other limitations too, but that single limitation alone makes Amnezia free VPN a non-starter except for those living in supported countries where internet censorship is prevalent.

AmneziaVPN Premium

Amnezia’s Premium VPN is not quite as feature-rich as the best VPNs, but it more than makes up for that with its excellent obfuscation and privacy. AmneziaVPN Premium utilizes only RAM servers, which means everything is wiped with each reboot.

AmneziaVPN does not collect or store activity history: visited sites, IP addresses, and session data are not available to us. Servers run RAM-only — nothing is written to disk and everything is wiped on reboot

Servers are currently available in only 20 countries, with one server per country and the majority situated throughout Europe. However, I suspect the number of servers will almost certainly increase exponentially as the user base grows.

AmneziaVPN has been independently audited by 7A Security on two occasions – in 2022 and 2024 – with no critical vulnerabilities found and a “robust architecture” noted by the security experts.

AmneziaVPN Premium currently costs $28.00 for 6 months or $48.00 per year, covering unlimited data on up to 7 devices. Unfortunately, payment options are limited to credit card, debit card, or cryptocurrency.

BOTTOM LINE:

AmneziaVPN Premium, although currently comparatively short on server locations, includes the features you’d expect from a premium VPN, plus, of course, its superior AmneziaWG protocol. AmneziaVPN is specifically designed to overcome internet restrictions, and in my opinion, that is certainly its most appealing attribute.

NOTE: AmneziaVPN Premium is currently utilizing version 1.5 of the AmneziaWG protocol. The more advanced version 2.0 is currently only available for self-hosted users, but I expect it will be available for all users in due course

  1. Thanks Jim

Would have loved to have tried this VPN out on my recent trip to China if it was offered there but sadly it isn’t. I did manage to get my usual VPN working there (PIA) if I set it to search automatically through the long list of country servers. As long as I was patient enough to keep hitting refresh constantly I was occasionally lucky enough to get connected through a refreshed server IP from another country like Canada or Denmark that the Chinese firewall didn’t yet know about. Mind you from hotel speed internet in China to Canada and back again makes it impossible to enjoy videos without the need for spooling up every minute or so !

It was the only way I could actually read and reply to Dave’s Computer Tips as you are most definitely blocked by the CCP for normal access in China !

    1. Hey Reg,

AmneziaWG is a freely available open-source protocol that I suspect will be adopted by all VPNs eventually.

Glad to know you’re home safe.
