Hi
I have not used it myself, but one of my friends who also runs a senior's website swears by it. According to her it is 100 % compatible with MS Office.
It is free so you will not lose anything by installing and using it. I am also contemplating installing it.

If you know how to use MS Office you should have no problems learning OpenOffice. It is just a matter of a little different navigation, but it is very intuitive. :)

I'm pretty sure versions 2.x and 3.x will support Word 2000. You may need to look for OO 2.4 to read Office 97 docs.
Always code as if the person who winds up maintaining your code is a dangerous psychopath and knows where you live.
