I have not used it myself, but one of my friends who also runs a senior's website swears by it. According to her it is 100 % compatible with MS Office.
It is free so you will not lose anything by installing and using it. I am also contemplating installing it.

If you know how to use MS Office you should have no problems learning OpenOffice. It is just a matter of a little different navigation, but it is very intuitive.

Carol for my own knowledge could you please tell if current version of open office would support word, excel created in Office 97 or 2000?

I'm pretty sure versions 2.x and 3.x will support Word 2000. You may need to look for OO 2.4 to read Office 97 docs.
