Microsoft is shutting down Skype in May 2025. The company announced this in an X statement.
Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype
Microsoft says that Skype users can use their Skype log-in information on the Microsoft Teams’ free tier in the “coming days.” Alternatively, users can download their Skype data using the app’s built-in export tool.
Skype launched in 2003 in Estonia as a way to make calls worldwide for free using the internet. The service became popular and eBay bought it in 2005 for $2.6 billion. eBay sold the company in 2009 for $1.9 bilion. Microsoft bought Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion and integrated the service into its other products.
Skype had 300 million users at its peak but was down to 36 million users in 2023 (the last time Microsoft shared its numbers). Skype faced competition from other products like Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, Apple FaceTime, and WhatsApp.
