How To Use Libby For Free E-Books

Free E-Books, Audiobooks, And Magazines

If you are interested in getting free e-books, magazines, or even audiobooks downloaded to your PC, mobile device, or your Kindle, this article is for you.

A few years ago, I wrote about OverDrive, Libby, and other software used to connect to your public library. Since then, OverDrive has been discontinued and incorporated into Libby. Also, during that time Libby has had several improvements that make it easier than ever to access millions of books and other materials. My library currently has 9.5 million books checked out but only 1.9 million online resource retrievals. There are still a lot of individuals either not aware of the ability to access your library resources online or prefer hard copies.  library-to-libby-to-device

Libby

Libby is a free app that lets you borrow e-books, audiobooks, and magazines from your library. You can stream and download titles for offline reading or listening, including Kindle. Libby is used by millions of users.

To download Libby, you need to have a compatible mobile device and an internet connection. It runs on iOS 10, Android 5.0 or newer devices, and PCs running Kindle Apps. You will need a Library card for your library. sign-into-library

Download

Rather than listing every possible way to download the Libby Help site has a step-by-step process to download, install, and use the app. It will even instruct you on how to obtain a library card if you are not familiar with the process.

What It Does

Libby allows you to browse your library’s catalog of e-books,  audiobooks, and your favorite magazines. The books available will differ for each library district.search-or-browse

Most books allow you to read or listen to the book with Libby or give you the option to send it directly to your Kindle reader by clicking on the “Read With Kindle” Icon. This will start a process where Libby will open your default browser, navigate to your Amazon home page, and let you send it to your Kindle Library.read-with-kindle

In addition, Libby will keep a record of your authors, series, or genre. It will show you the number of borrowed books, in your Libby library and a timeline of the books you borrowed so you will always know if you have already read the title, the number on hold, and any you may have tagged.manage-holds

Summary

I wanted to rewrite about Libby because I come across so many people who purchase Kindle books at Amazon that can be downloaded free from Libby. There are, of course, restrictions but only those of the library. You may only borrow books that are owned by your library district. They must be available to be downloaded or you put a hold and you will be notified when it is ready to be downloaded. Libby will also inform you of your place in line, how many copies are available, and how many readers have it on hold. You may keep the book for 28 days with an option to renew, and a maximum of 52 books at a time. If your library does not have a copy of the book, you may still request a copy and if they purchase a copy, you will receive a notice. I have often placed a request for a “soon-to-be-released book” by my favorite authors and have gotten copies within days of its release to the public. Most magazines are always available.
