I wrote before about this, but I couldn’t figure out why VLC couldn’t see my shared video folder. I recently discovered why. It was because I forgot to share the folder. 🙂
When I had my Maestro cable setup, I didn’t have to share any folder. I had to place the videos in my library. To do this, right-click on a file or a folder and select “Include in library” from the context menu. Then select the library folder to save in – video, pictures, music, or whatever options you have available.

Then I shared my media folder by right-clicking on it. I clicked on “Give access to”. Then “Specific people”. Then I added “Everyone” to share it with and “Read” only permission.

To watch a video on my Android box I go into the TiVo menu. Then I click “APPS & GAMES” and then “VLC”.
Then I navigated and clicked on the “Local Network” icon.
I clicked on the “ASUS” icon and was prompted to log in to the computer. Universal Media Server (UMS) never prompted for a password but I did check the option previously to “Remember password“. Not sure if needed for UMS. Input if asked.
I allowed access.
I have two “Universal Media Servers” listed because I have UMS installed on my Asus and CyberPowerPC. I don’t have any shared media on my CyberPowerPC. If I click on the last one, “ASUS: Terry“, it just says no media.
If I click on the “Universal Media Server” (from ASUS) this is what I get:
Now I can click “Movies and TV”, my shared media folder from my Asus. I can now access any video files with no issues, not yet anyway. 🙂 I do not have to use the “#–TRANSCODE–#” option.
Going to the “Local Network” screen. I click on the “ASUS” option. Then click on the “Movies and TV” folder. It looks like this:
Again, easy access to all my videos.
Maestro was easier but I like this even better because I can fast-forward and rewind videos. If I stop watching a video, it will start where I left off when I resume watching it. The Maestro system never gave me any of those options.
