David - This is a pretty tricky operation in XP, the following should work fine provided you follow the steps in order:
1) Create a new account with administrator privileges: Navigate to[b:2gv6avsg] Control Panel>User Accounts[/b:2gv6avsg]. Click on "Create new account", enter a name for the account and then click [b:2gv6avsg]Next[/b:2gv6avsg]. Click "Computer administrator" and then click "Create Account".
2) Transfer data from old account to new account: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151
3) Delete old account - you will need to be logged on to the [u:2gv6avsg]new[/u:2gv6avsg] user account you just created: [b:2gv6avsg]Navigate to Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management[/b:2gv6avsg]. Expand "Local Users and Groups", click on "Users". You should then see a list of all the current local user accounts. Right click on the entry for the old account and "Delete".

Hi David,
First we'll remove any temporary files you have on your account before transferring files. They're large and typically out of date, or at the least easily recreated whenever said program needs them.
From your old logon, open a command prompt (start-run-'cmd'-ok).
Perform the following commands: (everything after the # explains what we're doing -- just type the stuff before the #)
[code:230gfbav]
cd %tmp% #this selects your temporary folder
rd /s /q . #this will attempt to remove the directory you're currently in
[/code:230gfbav]
You'll see a few files it couldn't delete, and that's fine. What this does is change to your temp directory and try to remove it. You can't remove non-empty directories or directories that you're in, so the directory won't go away. And any files that are in use stay put too. the /s says take subfolders too and the /q says don't ask me to confirm.
Next go into your web browser(s) and clear temporary internet data. No need to move that over to your new account either.
Reboot the computer and come up to the logon screen. Rather than click on a user account to login, press Ctrl+Alt and Del twice (Hold Ctrl+Alt and double tap the Del key). Type in user Administrator and whatever your Administrator password is.
Now Open up c:documents and settings
You'll see a directory listing here of all the user accounts on your computer. Depending on whether you have hidden files showing or not you'll also see Default User and All Users. (Administrator user will have access to all accounts).
Before we start, please backup this directory.
Open the directory for your old user name.
Open another directory with your new user name.
Drag and drop the folders you need from the old to the new.
These are the folders I'd start with:
* Desktop
* My Documents
* Application Settings
* Local Settings
If asked to overwrite, say yes.
That should do it.
[quote:1zuebngn]One thing I'd add to his - I would not delete your old account until you know you have everything you need off of it or backed up.[/quote:1zuebngn]
Yes, good thought Zig. Do not delete the old account until you are certain everything has been transferred correctly and the new account is working 100%.

Hi Mate:
I'm getting nowhere with this. My brain is just not functioning. Attaching what my user accounts look like.
Can you please step me through the change?
Cheers....David
Hey David - Log-on to your original administrator account (the one under your name) and then go through exactly the same steps as you did to set up the "Renfrew" Account, except this time you would select an 'administrator' account rather than 'limited'. So when you get to the last screen, under "Pick an account type", select 'Computer administrator' and then just click on the 'Create Account' button:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... ounts.mspx
[b:guo270mp]NOTE[/b:guo270mp]: You will need to pick an account name which is different to your original administrator account, something similar will do; e.g. if you have a middle name include that (or just the initial). Or include your full christian name but just the initial letter of your surname...like this (DAVID W). The change only needs to be subtle.
Do you have Skype installed?? If we can get together at an agreed time, I can step you through this via Skype.

Hi Mate:
I'll give it a try and let you know. Should I get rid of RENFREW? Don't I have to get rid of my original ADMINISTRATOR account?
I don't have SKYPE but I do have ICQ. Would that help?
