Yesterday I rebooted my XP Pro SP3 machine. After my desktop had loaded but before my programs that are on auto load started a window asking for permission for Desktop.exe (From Microsoft) to load.
The only problem is none of my programs (Skype, etc) can load until I tell it yes/no.
That is a big problem.
Any thoughts?

Hey CT - This is almost certainly malware, it's a nasty little beggar too...very difficult to get rid of completely.

A quick Google search using the term "desktop.exe" will render plenty of hits.

Strongly suggest you immediately run full/thorough scans with any resident security software and also with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware too.

Also suggest you work in Safe Mode as much as possible to help try and minimise any damage/spread. Also stay off the net as much as you can and connect only when absolutely necessary, until such times as you get rid this malware.

Cheers....Jim

and if you haven't already, back up!!!

On the off chance your Windows install gets thoroughly trashed, you'll want some form of data recovery available. Keep your backups separate from anything else on your network until it's been thoroughly scrubbed as well.

Scanned and cleaned....all seems to be working well.
I will do a rescan in Safe Mode.
