Error message when attempting "A System Image" on a Windows 7 Genuine PRO 64- bit Sony Vaio new Laptop:
"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".
Trying to backup on a relatively new (a month old) 3Tb WD Essential External HDD.
Tried 2 different USB ports, still the same error.

System Image went fine on another 1Tb WD Essential External HDD.

So were you able to save an image to the 1TB drive?
Here are some things to try:
1) Run chkdisk /r on the drive you are attempting to backup, your 'C' drive: Open a command prompt window (as administrator) and type in [b:305wzzzs]chkdsk c: /r[/b:305wzzzs]
2) If that doesn't do it, try running sfc /scannow (also via cmd).
3) If neither of those work, try turning off System Restore for 'C' drive.
4) Last hope here; try disabling all security software.
That's about all I can suggest mate, if none of that does the trick then I am at a loss and someone else will need to jump in.

Ok, I would give it a try.

No security software is installed as of now.

Grr - If you are able to save an image to the 1TB disc then the problem must lie with the bigger drive; so those steps I have given you are not going to make any difference.....don't bother with them.
Make sure both external drives are formatted in NTFS, particularly the 3TB drive which is failing to save the image. If it is formatted in FAT32, reformat it to NTSF and that should fix the problem.

The 3TB drive is also formatted in NTFS like the 1 TB drive. Though it is factory formatted. I never formatted it from my side.
Then I am at a loss Grr. You could try re-formatting the 3GB drive locally but I doubt that will make any difference.
I've been hunting around the net to see if there are any other reports of 3GB external hard drives not working properly with the Windows 7 imaging software but haven't found anything at all.
Is there any data on that external drive at the moment; particularly any proprietary backup software?

there was some WD software, but I didn't installed it. WD wouldn't have anything pre-installed.
So currently I just have some data on the 3TB drive.
1 more thing, the laptop is as such, I didn't connected it to internet for getting the latest updates for Windows.

Grr, it seems there must be something specific to the 3TB drive which is upsetting the process. Everything is working fine, you proved that by creating and saving an image to the 1TB drive and the only thing that is changing is the destination drive...so that has to be the culprit.
I have been reading up some more and there should be no compatibility issues between the 3TB hard drive and Windows 7 (or 64-bit). In fact most manufacturers are saying that the 3TB drives actually require a 64-bit OS. However there would be an issue with XP and a 3TB hard drive because of limitations set in the MBR in that OS......limited to 2.2TB.
The only thing I can suggest is that you go ahead and re-format the 3TB drive via the new laptop, that will ensure absolute compatibility. Make sure you save any wanted data to a different device first, re-formatting will wipe all existing data.

Can you navigate to and create files manually without using Windows backup?
It looks like the WD drive is using USB3 with limited USB2 support. It's very possible Windows thinks you're USB3 capable but the hardware doesn't support it. Just a guess at this point.
Have you tried formatting the drive from within Windows??

Yes, I formatted the drive from Windows.
And the backup was successful on another 1Tb ext. drive
On connecting the drive Windows prompted a missing driver, and I installed it. WD USB SES USB driver.
Do you have another computer you can try to backup to the 3 TB drive with? That will indicate if it is the drive itself, an interface on this specific machine, or something else.
Have you tried a different cable?

Unfortunately that is the only W7 laptop/system.
I tried a different cable, as I got another HDD same make/model, but it gave exactly same error message.
Sorry I'm late to the party here...
The problem is the drive formatting and the physical size. Luckily you're running 64bit - 32bit users will be out of luck as they don't have the ability to access the Long LBA drives (not enough addresses).
Look for a BIOS and motherboard driver updates first. If that works you'll be able to access all 3 TB. If it doesn't you will have to partition the drive down to 2.1TB and reformat.
