hey guys,
I had a BSOD yesterday and got everything running smoothly until..........my first reboot and I get a "temporary desktop".
OK, I'll just do a reinstall. Change the BIOS to boot from the CD.....no luck will not boot from the CD and no System Restore points even though I make at least one point a week.
I can get it to the point of "repair computer" but a password is requested. No joy there....

Hi Terry - Dave is probably going to offer the best advice here, I'll give him a nudge. 
The "temporary desktop" would most likely be caused by a corrupt user profile. Here's a guide on how to fix that: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows7/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile
Not quite sure why the machine won't boot from the installation media, that can often indicate a problem with the optical drive... have you tried booting from other CD/DVDs?

Are you sure you aren't booting from the DVD? Is the screen mostly blue with white/light gray text?
The Repair Computer option is a function of the OS install DVD/CD, so you'd have to get to that point to see it.
Also, have you tried hitting "Enter" when it asks for the password and have you tried your current password followed by enter (no password-enter and your password-enter)?

I tried to create a new user thru the regedit but it kept asking for an unknown username/password. I tried just clicking on enter to no avail and other user/passw that I use for other applications.
The machine would boot directly to the temp desktop even though I had the dvd boot option selected in the BIOS. Sometimes it would just get to a black screen with a flashing cursor that would stay there forever.....
I must have rebooted 50 times with no help. It was along process because the mboard logo would be on screen for 2 and a half minutes.
I gave up around 6AM.....
Around 11AM I walk out and reboot one more time.....yep...it booted to the DVD and I did a restore from an image the had been created the day before the BSOD.
A couple of hours later I come home to a perfectly normal desktop. wooohooo
Is there possibly an issue with the C drive? I am planning on purchasing a SSD for the W7 OS.

It is possible there is a problem with the the drive, but more likely it just took a long time to get there. I had a work laptop several years ago that took 14 hours once to get booted to that point! Similar issue with BSOD and black screen with white flashing underscore character, so I left it over night and it was still that way the next morning, and eventually it got there. But it was a work laptop so had plenty of time to let it sit 
Highly recommend the SSD drives as I just put one in my system and it flies!!! Reduced my boot time from almost 3 - 4 minutes (including mother board screen) using 10,000 RPM drives to 1 minute for Windows to be up and going (including the mother board screen)!
