I have an HP 932c deskjet printer attached to Win7 Pro PC. It suddenly stopped working. Received an error code 1053 spooler will not start.

Can someone please help?

Thanks,

David

Hi David - This is a very difficult error to diagnose... so many possibilities.

The usual method for basic printer malfunctions is to clear any print jobs, switch the printer off for several minutes, and then switch it back on again... but I don't believe that is going to work in your case. I'm thinking maybe a driver issue.

How old is the HP printer... is it the same one you used when you were running XP? Where did you get the printer driver from... did you install the driver from a disc which came with the printer?

Cheers (oh, and happy Thanksgiving mate)... Jim

Hi Jim:
Thanks for prompt reply.

Tried clearing and switching printer off. Did not work. Yes, it is the same one I used on the XP machine. The driver was installed when the printer was attached to the PC. The original HP disk did not work. The crazy thing is it has worked for about three months without any problems. Then suddenly the spooler problem.

Cheers mate..........David

Yes, well it is a tricky one David. This is a fairly common complaint, seems Windows itself often mucks up some associated files in the System32 folder.

Please navigate to your C:\Windows\System32 folder and look for two files: spoolsv.exe.org and spoolsv.exe

Let me know if either or both are present.

All I have is SPOOLSV.EXE

Okay, cool. That's how it's supposed to be.

Alright mate, I think the best thing now would be to uninstall the current Windows generic driver, and download and install the official HP driver.

Go to the HP site here: http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Printers/Printers

Across the top of the page you should see a link to "Support & Drivers" - click on that link.

Click on "Drivers & Software".

Enter your product name and number.

Now select your operating system - make sure to choose 64 or 32 bit, whichever is applicable.

You should now see a link to "Driver - Product Installation Software". Click the link and download the driver.

Uninstall the old driver.

Install the new driver.

Okay mate. You might have to do this then:

Got into Device Manager, open the entry for the Printer.

Click on the Update Driver button and then point Windows to the downloaded file (driver).

That should do it.

Device manager does not show the printer???

I tried disconnecting the USB cord to the printer, then rebooting the system. I removed the printer. then plugged in the USB cord and everything seemed to work. However, when I shut down the system and rebooted  the problem was back.

David - When you click the Update Driver button you should receive two options....

1) Search automatically for updated driver software... and

2) Browse my computer for driver software.

You need to choose the second option, then you'll be able to browse to and select the driver you downloaded from HP.

Hmm, seems there may be more than just one issue with your system then David.

Not sure where we can go from here mate, I might have to refer this one to Dave.

In the meantime could you please do the following:

Open a 'Run' dialogue box and type in sfc /scannow (note: there is a space between 'sfc' and the forward slash).

Then click OK (or press Enter).

Let it run and please report what message you get at the end.

How about we see if there are any print jobs stuck in the cue that may prevent a new one from cueing.

  1. Open Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button

, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Printers.

  2. Double-click the printer that you are using.

  3. In the print queue, right-click the item that you want to stop printing (this would be all of them), and then click Cancel.

Were there any to cancel?

Problem solved. Thanks for all your help. I called Microsoft Support and they fixed the problem.
