Not a silly question at all. This can and does happen, especially where multiple updates are concerned.

I assume we are talking about Windows updates?

What operating system are you running? Seeing you have only had the desktop for a year, I am assuming Windows 7, but we need to know for sure.

How long ago did you install the updates?

When installing multiple updates it can happen that one or more updates does not get fully installed. The first thing you should do is restart your machine again and see if IE then works. Please do that and report back

Please answer the above questions and we'll take it from there.

Seeing how it was only 2 weeks ago and you haven't really done much with the machine since, I suggest you perform a system restore.

Restoring the system to a point prior to when the updates were installed should reverse the effect and fix the problem.

Hopefully, you have a system restore point available which is dated prior to the issue. Get back to us if not.

Okay, good. Thanks for letting us know.

Now, if you have your Windows Updates set to Automatic, go into Windows Update immediately and change that setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". Then Click OK. Otherwise the exact same updates will get installed again and most likely cause the exact same issue.

When the list of updates comes through again, provide us with a list and we'll check through and see if we can identify the culprit.
