Question......Someone gave me an old HP laptop that had been refurbished. They had no knowledge of computers and never took care of it.
It is now running Windows 10 but it is so very very slow.

I would like to do a factory reset, to get rid of all the junk and whatever malware may be hiding on it. But......When I do that will it restart / reset as the original laptop running Windows 7...or the Windows 10 that was installed when it was refurbished.???

Get The Media Creation Tool from Microsoft.

You must know what the current installation is: 64-bit or 32-bit, and also whether it is Home or Pro edition.

Once you have this information run the Tool, answer a few questions, and have a thumb drive ready that is at least 4GB in size.

Once finished, you can use the thumb drive to boot your system and install a clean version of Windows 10. It will be the latest available version of Windows.

Note that you will lose any information on the thumb drive. You will also lose all the data and installed programs on the computer. You should run a backup before beginning this process... just in case.

HTH,
Richard

Hello,

You will get Windows 10 running as it was previously. You may also choose Keep My Files (it's a better variant, in case you are going to reuse the PC). Note: in case you choose to keep your files, the reset option will give you a formatted file on the desktop with the removed desktop apps list. Thus, you may use it to reinstall the programs you need in the future.
