Problems with virtual router

Hello altogether,

I´ve got a problem with VirtualRouterPlus. Perhaps there´s someone who can help.

I connect to the internet exclusively via a web-stick (Aldi Web-Stick Model S 4012, Manufacturer: HUAWEI E1550 HSDPA USB Stick). I run WIN 8.1, 64bit on my PC.

What I want to do is give an internet-connection to my laptop as well without having to reconnect the web-stick each time I switch between PC and laptop.
I want to use my laptop (Linux/Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 64bit and WIN7, 64bit, Dual-Boot).
Therefore I thought of solving this problem with the help of a virtual router.
So I decided to employ VirtualRouterPlus (and VirtualRouter Manager).

I actually succeed in establishing a connection. The laptop recognizes the existence of the virtual WLAN. It also connects to it.
And VirtualRouter Manager on my host-PC says:"Peers connected: (Laptop)". So the connection really is established.

I can access files and folders from my host PC. That really works.
But for some reason no internet-connection can be established.
It seems as if some sort of interconnection of my Huawei web-stick-adapter with the virtual router-adapter is missing.

To summarize: WIFI-network is established, but no internet-connectivity.

Can someone help me? Any suggestions are welcome

Greetings
Rosika https://davescomputertips.com/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-smileys/sf-frown.gif

P.S.:

I also tried "MyPublicWifi" software. Just with the same results.

Hi Daniel,

thanks for responding to my query.
As you can see I´ve got more than one "problem" at the moment.

Have a nice day.

Rosika,
The easiest solution would be to run ICS (internet connections sharing) on the PC and share the connection to the laptop. I've only used ICS once (many many moons ago) and don't remember much about the process. I also can't speak of it's efficiency, or if it would work at all, over WiFi (your PC and laptop would both require wireless capability).

You should be able to enable it on the Properties windows of your adapter settings in Network and Sharing Center. There will be a separate tab for Sharing and you will have to enable Allow other network computers to connect through this computer's internet connection.

Hi David,

thanks a lot for your reply.

Allow other network computers to connect through this computer's internet connection.

O.K. I´ve done that already. And it works. But just to a certain extent.
To be more precise:

I can access files and folders from my host PC. That really works.
But for some reason no internet-connection can be established.
And the strangest thing is that the virtual router adapter is recognized as an active network in network and sharing center. And it says internet connection is established.

Despite all that I don´t have access to the internet on the laptop. I´m really at my wit´s end.

Nevertheless thanks for your hints.

Have a nice day.

Run ipconfig /all from a command prompt and scroll the the active network connection (assuming the PC has more than one) and take a screenshot of the results.

Hello David,

thanks again for your reply.
I ran ipconfig /all.
Hopefully this might help.

Hi Daniel,

thanks for your reply.
Alas, nothing new on the page I looked at following your link.
I know all that and I carried out all those steps.

But I think I know what might be the cause of the problem:

Taking a closer look at the "ipconfig /all"-results I noticed that the standard gateway of
my web-stick is 0.0.0.0.
No idea why that is and how to fix this. But that´s the snag I believe.

Many greetings

Going back to the Windows PC sharing with the internet connection using ICS...

Do you have internet connectivity on the Windows PC running ICS? If so the problem is on the additional computer connected, and as you suspect I believe it would be because there is no gateway, which will present those symptoms (file access, but no internet).

When you enable ICS there should be a new network connection created (on the computer running ICS) and from your information included above (my German stinks) I think it is the adapter with 169.254.19.201 as the IP address.

All you should need to do is set the gateway IP of the network connection on the receiving computer to the IP of the correct network adapter (169.254.19.201 I believe).

In Windows you open the properties of the adapter and find the TCP/IP V4 setting and click properties.

On Linux it would be something along the lines of route add default gw 169.254.19.201

Hi David,

thanks for your reply. It´s awfully kind of you putting such an effort in trying to help me.

All you should need to do is set the gateway IP of the network connection on the receiving computer to the IP of the correct network adapter (169.254.19.201 I believe).

What you suggest makes perfect sense and I was so sure it works this time.
I absolutely followed all the steps. But it simply won´t work. Nothing changed - the same results as before.

I truly believe there´s nothing to be done any more. For any reason there´s no internet-connectivity. Perhaps it´s typical of that very web-stick, I don´t know.

I´ve just tried the whole thing with windows7 on my laptop (guest). As it´s dual-boot I´m going to try that with Ubuntu as well. But that´s not going to happen before Saturday. I´ll keep you posted.

In the meantime thank you so much and have a nice day.

Hi David,

in the meantime I found the time to try out the procedure you described using Ubuntu on my laptop.
I could easily configure it as intended but - as might be expected - it didn´t work out either. No internet connectivity.
So that´s it, I think. Nothing more to be done I´m afraid.

But a big thank-you for the help you provided. That was really kind.

I hope you have a nice weekend. All the best wishes.
