Unable to send or receive messages for the Gmail (grodgers42) account. The email server returned an error.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: * OK Gimap ready for requests from 2.30.196.7 v22mb253877257wmf
Server: 'imap.gmail.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC90
Protocol: POP3
Port: 993
Secure(SSL): Yes
Can anyone please provide a solution to the above problem ASAP? I have no problems with my mail on my iphone but not so on my computer. Is there a simple fix for this? Thanks for your help.

Hi Gerald,

This a common error and not too easy to diagnose. Firstly, from the information you've included in your post I am assuming you are using Windows Live Mail to manage your Gmail account and the error is being thrown up by Windows Live Mail... is that correct?

This type of error usually means a misconfiguration in the Gmail account setting. I can see from the information you have provided that there is a conflict between the Gmail server and the Protocol.

Gmail Sever is "imap" and the Protocol is "POP3". I'm pretty sure these need to be the same... either both imap or both POP3. Go to the Gmail account properties in Windows Live Mail and change the Protocol from POP3 to imap, see if that fixes it.

If you need more info on where to change that settings, get back to me and I'll help out with that.

Hi Jim
Thanks for quick reply. Yes using WLM to manage gmail account. I've already tried both imap & pop3 but neither work. Have been using the imap protocol for a long time without any problem so not sure what is going on. There has been no change to my Win 10 installation either. So sadly still need help. Thank you.

Hey Gerald,

I just realized, there has been a change with managing Gmail through a locally installed email client (such as Windows Live Mail), relating to security/signing in. That change came into effect after 30th May.

After 30th May you can no longer sing-in to the Gmail server using your old email password, you have to generate an app password via Google account settings and that is what you'll need to enter into the account properties in order to sign in.

Here is a video tutorial:

Also, here's a written guide from our own Stu Berg: https://davescomputertips.com/how-to-make-apps-work-with-gmail-app-passwords/

Hi Jim
Thanks again for the video etc. Very, very helpful. Easy to follow step by step instructions. The good news is that Gmail is now working perfectly on my iphone. The bad news is I'm still getting the same error message using my email in my browser. It too was working perfectly for a few years but not any more. Anymore tips or helps would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards and many thanks
Gerald

Hey Gerald,

Sorry mate, that's about the limit of my Gmail knowledge, don't use it myself.

If the app password hasn't done the trick the only other thing I can suggest would be to check all the account settings- port numbers (in and out), authentication method, mail servers (in and out), etc.

Sorry can't be of more help.

Cheers... Jim
