Yes folks, a few short months after the release of version 4, Firefox 5 is well on the way and has now moved from Beta to Release Candidate stage.

With multiple under-the-hood tweaks to improve performance, changes are minor but certainly not insignificant; memory management, JavaScript rendering and networking performance have all been enhanced.

Memory management and rendering performance were reportedly improved in version 4, but judging by subsequent user comments that has largely proven to be a disappointment. Hopefully, Mozilla will have finally addressed those issues more successfully with this latest edition.

The battle rages on!!!

Today version 5 launched. Was very disappointed with version 4.x, as it was actually slower than version 3.6.17 in loading.

A happy surprise so far, in that version 5 is much faster, almost at lighting speed with loading. Very impressed. Will continue testing and install it on another computer this weekend. Can't wait, Mindblower!

Hey MB - Thanks for the heads up mate....much appreciated.

Out of interest; did you download v5 from a download site or via the 'Check for Updates' option in Firefox itself? Reason I ask is; I just tried the second option and my Firefox 3 is still just offering v4 for update....no v5 as yet.

Keep us informed.

Thanks....Jim

Actually if you're still using a version 3, and use FF to check for an update, chances are you'll be advised of version 3.6.18. I use an excellent program called Update Checker http://www.filehippo.com (believe it's mentioned here) and that's where I obtained my copy, Mindblower!

Firefox 5.0 is now available on Mozilla's website.
I've downloaded the portable version (from portableapps.com) to check it out (still having 3.6 as my installed Firefox), so no personal experience yet (i.e. expect rant later?).
There's a lot of talk about the latest version over at the mozillaZine Forums (in the Support section) and I found a couple of not so positive articles, here[/url:cmui620f] and here[/url:cmui620f] - the former's about the RC updates and the latter about add-ons keeping up with Firefox updates.

@Jim
I think you need to have Firefox 4.0 to get the 5.0 updates. Since you're still using 3.6, get at least the latest update[/url:cmui620f] (3.6.18), it's a security one.

Hey FD - Yes, thank you...I already have v3.6.18.

Thanks for the heads up about needing v4 before being offered the update to v5 too, I thought that might have been the case.
