I've had good luck with a cablestogo model.

Other than that I've never really used one...

I've used a few, but most were no name brands.

The best I advice I can offer is to get a powered hub. They cost more and require an AC connections, but there is good reason to go that route.

A USB port has a maximum current capability of 500ma (milliamps). A non-powered hub still has that limit, but now you have multiply devices pulling from that one 500ma pool, which can cause power problems if there are several USB devices connected or more than one device that requires a higher current (external hard drives).

Powered hubs use the AC power to provide the 500ma to EACH USB port on the hub, so you shouldn't have any issues no matter what you connect.

Hope that makes sense!
