I am a most reluctant facebook user , and am most worried about daily stories about its security lapses.
So can please someone explain how it is that more and more sites are asking you to register via facebook? When I tried to do so once it wanted to import my complete address book! I backed off hurriedly.
Is there a way to lock the online address book?
Actually there was one site which ONLY had the facebook option. I did not join it.
Is it a new fad? how does it help the sites?
As most of my family is on FB I keep being bombarded with multiple agendas most of which I deeply distrust.
What is the best way to keep its presence minimal apart from getting divorced completely?
Hey Shobha - FB is actually pretty safe, it's mostly down to how you configure your own settings.
Not sure why any site would ask users to register via FB - that's a new one on me. Most sites incorporate a FB 'Like' button because it is a very useful way to spread the word.
To ensure "minimal presence" make sure your Default Privacy is set to "Friends" and not to "Public". Also make sure Privacy settings under How You Connect are all set to "Friends" or "Friends of Friends" and [b:si632yzl]not[/b:si632yzl] set to "Everyone" or "Public".
Also, if you just want to use FB for communications with family and friends and are not interested in the games, etc., do not accept "App" invitations from [i:si632yzl]anyone[/i:si632yzl]. Remember, with most FB notifications, there is always the option to decline.
HTH,
Cheers...Jim

Thanks for the info. have changed the settings.
I did not mean registering Via/ I meant "with' facebook. While signing with Yahoo also it gives an option to sign with FB or Google. again it wants permission to get my whole address book.
How does it help yahoo?
again is there a way to lock my online address book?
