Windows 8.1 logoDaves Computer Tips is offering our subscribers the chance to win a copy of Windows 8.1 64-bit, including installation media and genuine product key, absolutely free!

Bearing in mind that XP’s end of support date is just around the corner, and many XP users will be looking to upgrade their operating system, we thought this might be a timely and useful prize.

DCT is pretty much the ‘home’ of Windows 8/8.1. Dave, myself, and Richard are all running Windows 8.1 and we all like the new operating system. Between us, we have written and published numerous articles, all drawn from first hand experience – guides, tips, how-tos, and the like – to help users setup and manage their new operating system.

It’s a terrific resource for anyone upgrading to Windows 8 or 8.1 and you can access all those articles in the one place by utilizing the ‘Post Categories’ feature in the right hand navigation panel. Just click on the ‘Windows 8’ item to view a list of links to all relevant titles:

  1. Dear Mr Hillier,

I have a XP system that has been very reliable to date. However with the upcoming ‘end of support’ date approaching I have been considering the various options. So I would dearly love to win a copy of Windows 8.1.

In addition, I’m sure I speak for many visitors here, in wanting to thank the DCT operator, staff and contributing writers for establishing and maintaining such an excellent website. I always enjoy my visits here and your weekly newsletters!

Windows 8 seems to be a very stable version of windows. I am also a user of XP and have never used vista or windows 7.

  9. the constant advances in technology require rapid adaptations, however these adaptations should facilitate the User Experience in handling every type of technological device. windows 8.1 is the representation of all these practical requirements for the current consumer market. I am a picky consumer and I want at my disposal technologies that adapt to my rhythm, so easy, practical and dynamic advances in information.

  10. I can always use another copy of Windows 8.1. I consider this the best version ever released by MS even if it doesn’t have a start button. 🙂 Classic Shell takes care of that oversight.

  18. Well, let’s see? A bit about moi.

I’ve been dabbling with computers for over a decade now. Started with Win. 98 & then went backwards to try older MS OS’s (including a Calmira shell over DOS on a 25mhz cpu!). After that, got a bug to try out a donated (from someone’s kerb) G4 Mac & had some fun there learning about scsi HDD’s & managed to trick it into accepting OSX (j/k–not really fun). From there, I stumbled upon Linux “live” cd’s– namely, the Knoppix distribution— which I went on to use to “rescue” many friend’s broken-down Windows machines!

I, like many, had a soft-spot for XP. ME was a mini-nightmare, Vista came good after SP2, & Win 7 is prob my fav since XP. But, I was seriously disappointed with Windows, in general, so I moved full-time to Linux. When Win. 8 was released, amid so much bad press, I still gave it a go- & decided Linux Mint was a better OS for me. Win. 8 just seemed “half-baked” somehow (like ME or Vista, pre-SP).

However, I’ve never been one to be too hasty- lol. Apparently, Windows 8.1 has addressed the majority of the Win. 8’s users most disliked issues…so, I’d like to see it, for myself.

Wonder how it’d cruise on my older (1st Gen) i7 desktop? Only one way to find out—> 😉

  19. The article makes a compelling argument for using windows 8.1 and all of its embedded Sky-drive cloud services. I am surprised though that many of the articles on Davescomputertips are about security and no mention was made about the security of Windows 8.1.
There is no mention of the bulk access of ALL sky-drive users data by the American security services, or that Microsoft has been working with the NSA since 2007 in order to enable this bulk access without the need for subpoena’s.
This is all fact and not conspiracy. If you are an inventor, writer, artist, company director or critic of the government, etc then be wary as all your personal and business documents used via sky-drive will be scanned, read, copied and stored in NSA data farms and any data of value could be given to 3rd parties to provide a commercial advantage to American businesses. As all these services are fully integrated into the operating system one can assume that all your personal documents are harvested and automatically read by the NSA wether you use the cloud integration or not.
