Every storage device has a finite lifespan – unfortunately – and the common hard drive and SSD are no exception to this rule. Fortunately for us both devices can be monitored for signs of failure using S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) and everyone should have a tool to do so in their virtual tech toolbox. Hard Disk Sentinel is one of those tools.

HDSentinel’s software monitors the S.M.A.R.T. data, temperature, and performance of your drives and presents it in an easy to understand manor visually, or by email. Hard Disk Sentinel Professional also allows the user to run seek, surface, and extended tests on drives and, should conditions indicate a failing drive , perform an emergency backup of critical files! You can use Hard Drive Sentinel to find out the present condition of a drive in real time, or to monitor drive(s) over time which allows you to see drive conditions trends before a failure causes loss of data.

Hard Disk Sentinel (HDSentinel) is a multi-OS SSD and HDD monitoring and analysis software. Its goal is to find, test, diagnose and repair hard disk drive problems, report and display SSD and HDD health, performance degradations and failures. Hard Disk Sentinel gives complete textual description, tips and displays/reports the most comprehensive information about the hard disks and solid state disks inside the computer and in external enclosures.

Clicking the Temperature tab will show temperature details for whichever drive you select in the left column. You can also set thresholds from here that will trigger notifications or perform other actions chosen by you.

The following tab shows the raw S.M.A.R.T. data from the drive selected in the left column and allows you to ignore or adjust how the program uses the data.

The Logs tab shows any problems logged since the program was installed. Luckily everything looks good on my computer!

Finally the Alerts tab shows any alerts for the selected drive the program has read that could be cause for alarm.

This is just a small sample of Hard Disk Sentinel’s features. In addition to the above it can conduct thorough self testing of drives, surface tests, seek time tests, emergency backup of critical files, and much much more! Hard Disk Sentinel Professional is suitable for both the common home user and serious computer tech. Easy to use. Easy to understand. What more can you ask of a tool that everyone should have in the tech toolbox?

  1. I’ve been using the standard version of Hard Disk Sentinel for about a month now and I’m very pleased with the program. We recently had some painting work done inside our home and the painters covered my computer desk (and desktop computer) with a plastic dropcloth– Hard Disk Sentinel alerted me that my computer was running hot because of that and I immediately shut it down. Kudos to the developer for such a useful program!

  2. HDSentinel is the best monitoring program on your HDD SDD.diagnose and repair hard disk drive problems, report and display SSD and HDD health, performance degradations and failures.

  3. I have been using the free version for a couple of months. It does an excellent job monitoring my hard drive. I would enjoy the extra features of the pro version.

  4. Extremely interested in this product after reading this article. Please count me in. Build my own pc’s for gaming and home use. Very paranoid about drive integrity nowadays and the safety of my personal data i.e family photos… This would be a great addition to my current software kit. Thanks for the information! Please, please, please pick me!

  5. I have used the standard version and like it. Looking forward to an opportunity to win the Pro.

  6. Such a great article – very comprehensive. I picked up a copy of “Hard Disk Sentinel Standard” from the “Bits du Jour” web-site and have been using it for a week or two so far. It really helps me keep track of my hard drives – both spinning and SSD.

I really would like to graduate to the Pro version and this giveaway is well timed – thanks a bunch guys!

I’ve lost a couple of hard drives in the past and could most likely have avoided some of the data loss if I had been using the “Sentinel” and noted any change in the SMART monitoring reports. Even with the Standard version I am a lot better off than before in tracking things.

  7. Hard Drive Sentinel is the only program you’ll need for drive diagnostics. The statistics and especially plots are top notch!

  8. I use the free version of HD Sentinel and love it! The pro version for FREE would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  9. I am using more and more types of disk drives and I need a utility program to check their health and performance. Types of drives that I use include common internal hard drives that typically come in computers/laptops, SSD drives that I am beginning to use, hyrbid SSD/common drives that use SSD for caching, external drives via USB2/USB3/Firewire/eSATA/network and flash drives. I like that Hard Disk Sentinel provides detailed information on the drives, temperature, surface tests, performance and more.

  10. I would love to win a copy of HARD DRIVE PRO SENTINENTAL!. I recently had my system crash due to a failed hard drive. . Thru the monitoring features of HD DISK PRO this might have alerted me and helped me backup my important data before it actually happened. I could use tyhis when my new system is up and running. thank you for the opportunity to win.

  11. I’ve always worried that I might loose important data. This program should warn me of an impending drive failure.

  12. I use the Standard version of Hard Drive Sentinel.
I have used this program to repair and diagnose what was once thought to be “bad” hard drives.
Before, I would simply toss it in the dumpster. Now, with this program I have the option to repair and reuse in another application.
Plus, it monitors and I can tell at a glance if I am having any issues.
I love the Standard version, but I could be fickle and turn my love towards the Pro version if I was lucky enough to win a lifetime copy 🙂
Either way, Thanks for a really great and useful program!!

  13. I got the standard version a few months ago and has been an integral part of my computer ever since. I would love to get the pro version in this giveaway.
