Can not network Win7 with My win XP Pro computer

Hi, Dave and everyone,

I realize that making a simple network with a win7 and win xp computer is not as easy as ("XP to XP") it used to be. Do you know of a link that explains this as I've tried and am unable to network the two computers. I can get the Win 7 computer to see and access the Win xp computer, but not the other way around. Win xp can only see the win7 computer but can not access it at all.

PS. If it can be explained to a novice like myself, from your users, that would be very much appreciated.

PPS. When I had WIn XP computers and win 98se ones, this was a simple mater using my wired router; I just mapped the other drive on each computer and allowed file sharing!

Are both computers on the same Workgroup?
In XP - Control Panel>System>Computer Name tab.
In Win 7 - Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings>Computer Name tab.

Thank you Dave for replying. Yes both computers use the same work group name. I was told that Win7 must be in xp mode to network with computers not using the same win7 os like xp. Others have told me to fool around with the network settings, STILL others have advised me to make specific changes in the registry!

I never before had this problem with networking my home computers; it was simple and intuitive. The router would see the computers attached and mapping the drives worked easily.Win7 has to make a new problem unless you only use win7 computers. Should there not be backward compatibility. Then the issue of win7 xp virtual mode must be used and only the ultimate and pro versions have this feature. I just want to network 2 computers that are wired to the same router with a broad band modem and have access to one another like in the past. Surely there must be a reasonably simple solution to this common practice of sharing two home computers.

First, the XP machine needs to be running the NTFS file system. If not, there are utilities to convert FAT32 to NTFS.

Second, just like VISTA, 7 uses a new protocol, called Link Layer Topology Discovery. LLTD. XP does not have this and an XP PC cannot be discovered by 7. You can fix the problem by downloading and installing the Layer Topology Discovery Responder (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en). Install it and your Windows XP PC will show up on the WIN7 network map, properly located, with the mouse hover in full working order. Tom

My Win7 computer sees my Win XP PRO computer and actually is sharing its printer. It also has access to all files,etc. My problem is getting the Win XP PRO computer to access the Win 7 machine! The Win 7 computer shows up on the network map of the Win XP PRO computer but access is denied to the files and folders! Therefore, I probably do not need the LLTD as my WIN XP PRO is discoverable and working well from the Win 7 computer. What must I do to access the Win 7 computer on the network from the Win XP PRO computer?
