What’s Your New Year’s Resolution?

I can honestly say that in all my life I have never made a new year’s resolution. Not because I am anywhere near perfect but simply because I am well aware that I do not have the willpower to see it through – or the won’t power, depending on whether it’s related to starting something or quitting something.

New year’s resolutions date way back to ancient times when they were largely to do with farming and the seasons. In more recent times, at the beginning of the 1900s, resolutions were very much religion based or spiritual in nature.

These days, resolutions are more about self-improvement, such as getting more exercise, losing weight, or quitting smoking. My doctor once told me to quit smoking and alcohol, so I gave up going to that doctor.

I guess I could be described as being weak-willed yet when I take on any job or project I will invariably give it my all. A contradictory combination. I am also a cantankerous old geezer, but I am old and male so that just goes with the territory. I guess I could try to be more patient and understanding… nah, that’s not gunna work.

You know what? I just thought of something I could set as my new year’s resolution; I hereby resolve to choose movies on Netflix more quickly and decisively so I actually get to hit the play button before falling asleep.

Anyway, I wish each and every one of you all the best for a safe and healthy 2023.

  1. Happy New Year Jim. Unlike you, I tried unsuccessfully for many years believing that this year I would be able to keep at least one resolution longer than the previous years attempts. Then it occurred to me, why wait for a special day to start a change. Since then, I decided (and have been very successful – tooting my horn) I will only change what I have the will to change. I am known for being stubborn, set in my ways, and I find this a blessing. So no to New Years resolutions. From what I hear, most resolutions are spur of the moment, not well thought out and barely last . But, who am I to say they might work for someone, Mindblower!
