What’s New In 21H1 (May 2021) Update

In short, not a lot. Microsoft began rolling out the latest Window 10 update (21H1) from 18th May to eligible PCs– eligible PCs are those currently running 2004 or 20H2. This will be a phased rollout so don’t panic if you don’t see the update listed for your machine right away.

According to Microsoft, 21H1 is another very small update in the vein of 20H2 and users won’t notice a lot of difference. Main changes include:

  • Ships with Chromium-powered default browser: Microsoft Edge legacy is no longer available
  • Ships without Adobe Flash Player
  • Windows Hello gets multi-camera support
  • Windows Defender Application Guard is now faster
  • To support remote work, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) has also received performance enhancements

If you use Windows Hello on your personal computer with an external camera, you may appreciate the added support for a multi-camera setup. Otherwise, you will not notice much difference at all. The next major feature update (21H2), including the new Action Center, floating menu, and brand new optional Start Menu is expected to arrive sometime during the third quarter.

21H1 is not a forced update and will be delivered as an optional update. As usual, we advise not to install the update straight away but rather wait for a while to see if any bugs are widely reported. I always back up my personal data plus create a full system image backup prior to installing any updates. With Microsoft’s history of delivering buggy Windows 10 updates, you can’t be too careful.

  1. Jim, I should have listened to your words of wisdom. Decided to see what the update was, and low and behold that started the download process. Had problems in the past cancelling the process, so I let it continue. After the reboot, I ran SFC. It detected and corrected several errors. Might be good practice to always run sfc /scannow, after all Windows updates, Mindblower!
