A few days ago I was called because a guy’s laptop wouldn’t boot up. This was an HP. It seemed completely dead. Then I noticed a little light that came on where the power was plugged in and another little light on the other side that indicated there was power going through the system.
So I decided I needed to do a hard reset of the power, that is, unplug it, remove the battery, hold down on the power button for about 30 seconds, plug it in again, and try turning it on.
One downside here is that it was one of those completely enclosed, no easy access panels type models. The ones manufacturers design to make you sweat trying to get at their insides. 🙂

This procedure was basically the same, remove the screws, pry open the case. Then I had to unscrew the battery and remove it. I pressed the power button for 30 seconds. Then plugged in the power cord and tried to turn it on.
It didn’t work the first time but I gave it a second shot. Sometimes this procedure might need to be repeated a few times. In my case, the computer started booting up after the second try.
So, I unplugged it and put the battery back in. Turned it on again to make sure it was still working. It was. Snapped the casing back into place. Try it again still working. Replaced the screws and finally, tried it again. Still working.
Apparently, this problem is caused by a likely power surge, and the safety mechanism built into the motherboard, to prevent overloads and burnouts, disconnects the power.
