The last few weeks I have been teaching you all about Facebook. If you missed those articles you can check them out here:
- How To Unblock People On Facebook
- How To Block People On Facebook
- How To Unfollow Facebook Pages/People
Now that you have caught up with those, it is time to teach you something new. During my studies on this platform, I noticed on the right side of my home screen, it has a contact list. This is a list of my friends which gives me easy access to contacting them through chat. Unfortunately, this list shows all the time and I want to hide it while recording my How-To videos. Since now I know about these settings, I’m going to show you where they are and how to use them. Before we start the lesson, make sure to check out these other articles I have created:
- How To Hide YouTube Subscriptions
- How To Save Bandwidth On Roku
- How To Check For Software Updates Roku
- How To Fix Loose USB Cable
- How To Manage Roku TV Power Saving Settings
Pull out those computers and let’s get started.
How To Change Facebook Chat Settings
I will be showing you how to do this on my Windows laptop using the Facebook website.
Step 1: Head over to Facebook.com and log in to your account.
Step 2: Once on your home screen, you should see a list of contacts on the right of the screen. If not the list, you should see the word, Contacts. At the top right of those contacts you will see 3 dots. Click on them.
Step 3: This will bring up the Chat Settings menu.
Customize your Messenger experience.
Here they give you many options to choose from:
- Incoming Call Sounds
- Message Sounds
- Pop-up new messages (Automatically open new messages.)
- Show Contacts
To disable any of these, all you need to do is click the switch to the right of them. I’m here to hide the contacts from the home screen. Click the switch to the right of that and they are not showing any more. They also give you some other options you can look at:
- Privacy and Safety link
- Active Status (OFF or ON)
- Message Delivery settings
- Block settings
For this article, I will show you the Active Status (Click it).
Step 4: The Active Status window will appear for you.
You won’t see when your friends and connections are active or recently active on this app. To make sure they can’t see this info about you, turn this setting off wherever you’re using Messenger or Facebook and your active status will no longer be shown. Learn moreYou can still use our services if active status is off.
Bonus: Chat Settings On Contacts
Step 1: Click on a person’s profile in the Contact list. After that, you will see the messaging screen. Look to the top of it and click the down arrow next to their name. This will bring up the Menu for the user.
- Open in Messenger
- View Profile
- Change theme
- Emoji
- Nicknames
And a few other options they give you here. I think the coolest one on here is the Nicknames option. Not going to dive into this but thought you all should know this was here.
Now you know how to find and use the Chat Settings on your Facebook account. Time to share your knowledge with the world.
