Free Office for iOS
In a somewhat surprising move, Microsoft has unshackled its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps for iOS. As of 6th September, iOS users can now create and edit Office content on iPads and iPhones without requiring a subscription (personal use only – business users still require a subscription).
Making full versions of its Office apps available for free is a bold move by Microsoft, and one that is obviously targeted at gaining a stronger foothold in the mobile arena. However, in its official blog announcement, Microsoft was quick to reassure subscribers of continuing additional benefits:
Of course Office 365 subscribers will continue to benefit from the full Office experience across devices with advanced editing and collaboration capabilities, unlimited OneDrive storage, Dropbox integration and a number of other benefits. <source>
And the strategy appears to be working; shortly after Microsoft’s announcement, Office apps jumped to the top of Apple’s App Store charts with Word sitting in the coveted #1 spot under the free category.
