So...I've never seen this before.
And never has Google.
But on my workstation (actually running Windows 2003, but it's close enough to XP, right?), my screensaver will not start if firefox is running.
I close firefox, let the computer sit, and the screen saver kicks in normally.
If I open firefox, the screen will lock, but the screen saver does not turn on. Nor does the monitor turn off after the set amount of time.
I think I'm going crazy. But this makes no sense to me as I don't think Firefox normally causes this behaviour.
Thoughts?
I think it's VLC now. Plus firefox.
If I open VLC at all during the day, then close it. My screensaver won't come back on until I close Firefox. Before VLC Firefox has no impact on the screensaver.
Minimized has no effect. I started in Safe Mode, but that involved restarting Firefox....
Tomorrow I will find some random SFW video to play while FF is in safe mode and see if it makes a difference (because, apparently, just opening VLC without playing anything didn't trigger it).
Le sigh.
Gee, first day a member of the forum and a problem I have.....
I too have a problem with the screen saver not activating if FireFox is up and running. Does not seem to make any difference whether it is on screen or minimized.
If I turn off FireFox the screen saver works as it should.
My thought is that some activity is going on within FireFox that precludes the Screen Saver Timer from doing its thingie'.
well...i ended up fixing this with a sledgehammer. I formatted and reinstalled Windows.
It did fix the problem though.
Occasionally still (not nearly as consistently) I will see my screen saver not kick on after the set amount of time. Restart FF and everything is fine. VLC may or may not be the culprit. My computer does so much that I can't really narrow it down so much.
One thing you could try is to run FF in Safe Mode, and see if you're still having the trouble. It could be an errant add-on.
