I have found that when I quit a program that it is still in memory. I open Sysinternals Process Explorer and they are still there. I try to kill them, but they will not go away for about five minutes.
I have scanned my system for viruses, malware and rootkits, but find none.
Please Help!!!
Hey Mongoplus - Is this happening with all programs or just some??
If it is not happening universally and is specific to certain programs only......what are the names of those affected programs?

Does the same thing happen when using the standard task manager in Windows?
Do you have any utility software running in the background?

It's normal for programs to exist in memory after they are closed. Most programs go through a clean up process where they gracefully release memory, delete temp files, etc. 5 minutes is a bit extreme for most programs. I've seen Firefox take quite a while to shutdown when it's been open for awhile.
In some cases, memory that hasn't been used for a while will be swapped to the hard drive - it's slower to access but gives more memory when needed. On a very busy computer, I could see the memory swapping and prioritization of application clean up taking a while while the computer focuses on other things.
What are your memory and processor usages like?
I have tried many different task managers and task killers (including Windows standard one). I also use Outer Technologies Cacheman memory manager.

I would start with this! Windows XP does a good job with memory management. Not perfect by any means, but not bad enough to add an additional program to the mix.
Might be off topic here, but I use a Ram optimizer program. One of the features (not the default), is to have the DLL of programs not in use, purged. Could this be the problem you're noticing? Unless one is truly strapped for memory, I'd not look for trouble, Mindblower!
