David - What have you tried so far:
1) Look under 'Sound' in Device Manager - check for any yellow error icons and check driver status.
2) Is the speaker icon still appearing in the notification area of the taskbar? - check volume settings and make sure nothing is muted.
3) Are you using external speakers? - check the connection and cabling between the computer and speakers.
If all settings, drivers and everything else appears to be fine; try another set of known working speakers.
HTH,
Cheers....Jim

Hi Jim:
I've tried all those things. The sound is missing on startup and shutdown only?????
Cheers,
David
Oh OK David.
Go to [b:2ya9dhoz]Control Panel>Sounds and Audio devices[/b:2ya9dhoz] and then click on the 'Sounds' tab. Look under "Windows Logon" and "Windows Logoff".
Are those functions associated with a sound?
I'm sorry, I've forgotten so much about XP. Is there a "Test" button available in that screen which you can click on to hear the actual sound?
Cheers....Jim

Hi Mate:
Yes they are. There is a TEST button and the sound works fine.
BTW. the tab is named "SOUND".
Thanks,
David

Is this the same computer that the front USB ports are having trouble on?
According to here[/url:8t9qeq7l]:
Make sure the following registry key exists:
HKCUAppEventsSchemesApps.Default.Default
To get to Registry Editor, go to start, run and type regedit and click ok. Navigate down the tree (HKCU = Current User) and see if the registry key exists.
For now, don't make any changes, just want to see if the key is there.

Hi Ziggie:
It doesn't exist.
Thanks,
David

Hm. It looks like it is there.
Let's try this.
Download Microsoft's TweakUI Power Toy. (Link[/url:gcug42l9])
Install it.
Open Tweak UI (Start -- All Programs -- Power Toys)
Under General, check the box for beep on errors.
Reboot.
Give that a go.

Hi Ziggie:
No luck. Did as you recommended. Then tried a restart and a cold start. No BEEPS! Should I remove TWEAKS?
Thanks,
David
Um. Now I'm stumped.
One other thing we could try is to create a new user and reboot while logged in as that user. See if the problem follows the user or stays the same.

Hi Ziggie:
This is wierd. I created a fictitious user account named RENFREW. When I log on or logoff the sounds are there. Yet when I use my account no sound. What do I do now?
Please se attached.
Thanks,
David

Ah, sorry.
Bear with me as I'm doing this from memory (my last XP machine just got turned into a linux slave).
Right Click on My computer, go to Manage.
Expand the Users and Groups tab.
Right Click on Users.
Select Add (or create or New) User.
Give it a name and a password.
Click OK.
Log out of Windows.
Log in to your new user.
Reboot and see if there are sounds.
Well, it sounds like some data in your user profile got corrupted. The easiest fix is to create a new user account and begin using that one instead of the corrupted one.
Umm....Let me do some digging on if we can repair your current user profile...

Hi Ziggie:
I didn't receive an email notification on your reply? I tried the "RENFREW" account but all the items on my desktop did not appear??? Can you walk me through it?
Thanks for all your help,
David
