I run LXLE desktop on an old XP and Bodhi on an old Vista, and both seem to run extremely fast and without problems.

That machine is still running out in my shop although it now has Linux Mint installed on it. I will usually run Linux in a VM, if the machine is able to, to get away from the grub boot option and I do believe Linux runs better in a VM than does Windows.
