Been working with my old HP computer today. XP is on sda1, lubuntu is on sda2, then my swap partition. Lubuntu 14.04 has been fun to work with. This is my first time to try a screenshot, so if I did anything wrong please fill free to correct me. Thanks Daniel.

Thank you, Jim. Never get to old to learn something. I did it all using Lubuntu and the genome tool for taking the screenshots. Daniel.

Hi there dandl
You give us hope indeed.
Using a different OS. and with success. Good on you and thanks for posting.
Maybe I'll try Linux. I've just learnt how to correctly pronounce it by the way
My last attempt at any of this was probably Amiga Basic !!!
Cheers.

Hi Colin.
I don't know what your main OS is but if you are really interested drop me a line. I have this old HP test machine set up with XP that I can install a different Linux OS on. Windows is not the only game in town but it will require a little lurning curve. The only reason I keep XP on this machine is because of the dual boot scenario that most people will be using. I have been really surprised their hasn't been more posting in the Linux forum since Microsoft has stopped support for XP. Daniel.

One of the main reasons I don't adopt Linux as my main OS Daniel, is because of the gaming aspect.
Although WINE does its job well with some games, it's not the ideal solution.....yet.

Hi Marc.
If a user is into gaming then windows is the only viable options. I too have experimented with wine with very limited success. I am trying to find a viable dual boot option for XP users who want a safe way to surf the internet and do email and facebook or even DCT. I know it can work but users will have to let Linux do what it does and not try to change it into windows. I know from your posts that you are a tweaker and so am I and I will find a way to make Linux work. The hard part is finding a Distro that works well with the machine one is working on, and I have learned that one Distro doesn't fit all machines. You know their are still a lot XP machines out their that need help, with your help I think we could find a solution. You are a lot better with words than I am. Thanks for your input. Daniel.

When you say XP Machine, what exactly do you mean?

OK, I am talking OEM machines like Dell,HP,E Machines etc. I have three machines that I have acquired that the users deemed unuseable, mostly because they didn't want to bother updating them or spend the money updating.
One of thoses machines is an old HP AMD Athlon XP3200 which I am using now, I am not talking about hand built machines, if you are able to do that then you can run anything you want. I am talking about users who are locked into a machine and simply can't afford to upgrade or can't because of their machines specs, like this HP which will run XP or whatever I can find. I have this HP set up for a test machine and if you like a particular Distro I will set it up and see how it works. If I break it, then no big loss. I even have an old Dell I will put on my bench, whatever you prefer and advise. You probably know more about the inner workings of Linux than I do. Daniel.

Always good to resuscitate old machines Daniel and no, my knowledge of Linux isn't extensive.
I always regard Linux as a good fallback position, mainly because I haven't seen the light and doubt that I ever will.

OK, then maybe some DCT readers might be intrested. I will say that Lubuntu 14.04 with the LXDE desktop has been working well with my HP computer. Thanks Daniel.

Thought I would update my post. Since Lubuntu I have ran PCLinuxOs, Manjaro, Zorin OS9, and Zorin 6.4 LTS which is running now. In my humble opinion I still think Lubuntu was the best and performed the best, probably any light weight distro would work on that old machine. All I wanted was a machine to surf the web and do my email and facebook and you tube. The only problem is finding a web browser that works in Linux. I never did get Mozilla firefox to play a video clip and Chromium wasn't much better due to a third party flash player. Although not perfect Linux can still provide, if you are still using XP, a way to at least safely access the internet. Daniel.

I finally got Adobe flash player working in Zorin. I can now play You Tube videos. Daniel.
