Hello people, I have a question. New install XP sp3. No software installed except Search Everything, Mbam, SRWare Iron, Firefox, Auslogics defrag, Ccleaner, and Avast Free 2014. Automatic Updates installed .Net Framework 2.0 sp2., 3.0 sp2,, 3.5 sp1. Why ?? I uninstalled and cleaned it off the computer, then I get the Windows Update pop up notice that updates are ready, I go check and the same .Net Framework is listed as Important Updates. Why ?? The above software is all that is installed, and as far as I know, none of those use .Net Framework. Ideas ??

.Net is basically a programming framework created by Microsoft. It's purpose is to give programmers the building blocks needed to develop programs without re-inventing the wheel - so to speak.

For the most part a company like Avast (as an example only) would most likely use a lower level programming language to create their application, but many smaller or independent developers rely on .Net to speed up the development process and/or implement features they would not be able to use without it.

That said, there are quite a few "larger" companies that rely on .Net to simplify their development process. HP's printer drivers come to mind, so it is almost a requirement to install it. In fact, everything from Vista on includes .Net as part of the OS.

Thanks David, I also just discovered that Microsoft is now sending out.Net Framework as an "Important Update" through Windows Update. I just checked another computer that is set to notify but not download or install updates and it had .Net Framework sitting and waiting along with the Security Updates from this last Patch Tuesday. That being said, it is now not an Optional update any longer.

From personal experience with XP and software. Some software require the .netFramework 2.0. Since all my updates cane from windows update I have .netFramework 1.0,1.1,2.0,3.0,3.5,and 4.0. and the security updates associated with them, probably don't need all of them but they don't bother me. Just use xp to run some older software.
