I have an elderly Dell (Pentium 4) running Win XP Pro with SP 3.

This machine began acting really strange a while back

Hi Germanicus - This is actually outside my area of expertise, but........

Just popped in to say G'day and welcome to the forum. I'm sure Dave or Ziggie (who are both a lot more computer savvy than I) will be along shortly to offer some advise.....stand by!!

In the meantime; here are a couple of links to MS support articles which may help: HERE[/url:dg2rzs0r] and HERE.[/url:dg2rzs0r]

This may well be connected with the serious boot issues you are experiencing, 'permissions' are a very finicky business.

Cheers now....Jim

Sadly, not all problems can be solved.

After running Check Disk which returned "No Bad Sectors" I ran Emsa DiskCheck on the recalcitrant files. Every file showed "Path/File access error". I also tried mbrfix but the system still wouldn't boot.

I'm going to keep the drive and when I'm familiar with Win 7 I'll get a bare drive docking station and try some photo recovery procedures and software I've learned of.

This system has served me long and well and has earned an honorable retirement (recycling).

This site is now in my bookmark folder labeled HELP because I'm moving from XP Pro to Win 7 Pro and I'm sure I'll be back.

Thanks for your efforts.

You can always buy another drive and install Windows Home Server on the old XP box!
