i want to format the drive on my dell laptop ill take off xp and try to find a win 7 os someplace and put it on. any help i will appreciate. can it even be done? david

heaven is full and hell is to far away, i think ill just stay here

Their are better alternatives than W7 for extending the life of your XP laptop. You surely know that W7 will be as dead as XP in a few more months and finding hardware drivers for some of your laptop hardware may not be easy.
Formatting is no problem.
