I am presently running 'Vista x32" O.S. and my Windows Installer is consistently stopping to the extent it does now not work at all ! I have ploughed through site after site looking for a solution to this problem, some of the methods I have tried are regunreg /rereg .... followed by start up procedures
set to manual /auto etc. In fact I have tried at least 6-8 suggested methods including one of updating
windows installer , but I am yet to find one for the Vista x32bit system ! I have even deleted the register for it and installed a working registry from another computer of the same system "which is working" So far the only concrete answer seems to be to re-format my machine , I think this is a bit over the top ?......I have seen literally hundreds of these posts either XP or Vista and no answers as yet
but what really concerns me is that quite a number of posts are asking why 'Microsoft' are not forthcoming with an answer to their own system problems if it is so wide spread ?
So why am I here , well there are some very clever people out there and I am confident someone has the answer and I would be more than appreciative if you could please share it with me and I will go forth and spread it amongst many more who are in the same sinking ship ! cheers "Smallships"

have you attempted to simply reinstall Windows Installer?

[url:2qubz2zw]http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en[/url:2qubz2zw]

You may have to uninstall the old one first from Add/Remove Software, or the Windows equivalent.

Zig, thanks for quick response , I have been to that site a couple of times , but alas there is no download for x32bit
I have even tried to download x64 and x86 but upon attempted installation an error message informs me that it does not suit my system !

Sorry, I should have pointed out that x86 = 32 bit. (Nice and clear, eh?)

What is the error message it gives you when you try to install the x86 version?

Hi Zig , I received an email from one of the DCT members who pointed out that x86 is in fact 32bit , which wasn't clear why but it certainly solved a few things , I promptly went into Microsoft and downloaded and "Installed" this exe.
'Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86-msu' [1.7MB.] It installed ok ! I then restarted my computer ,went into "Services"
and attempted to Start Windows Installer [ Manual Setting ] This is the message I received :
" The Windows Installer Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some Services stop Automatically if they
are not in use by other services or programs " ............ So I could not get W.I. to enable , I am wondering if one of my anti-virus
programs or etc . may be the cause of this so I have submitted these programs that are enabled and running upon machine start. Avast....Spyware Terminator...Registry Mechanic.......SUPERantispyware ....mind you I think these programs have always been there ? Perhaps I have not had Registry Mechanic always running at start mode ? ......Thanking you once again ,Smallships.

Well, the Windows Installer service is one of those that starts only when you're installing something. If you try to start it on your own, you'll...well, pretty much get the error you got.

The surest way to test it is to try and install something that requires it. If it installs, all is well. If you get a Windows Installer error, then you still have a problem.

What uses the Windows Installer? ~shrug~ that's a good question. Usually stuff from Microsoft will use it, but there's no guarantee.

Are you getting other error messages when you attempt to install a specific program?

ZIG , THANKS , I GUESS I WOULD HAVE TO FIND A SUITABLE DOWNLOAD TO TEST THE BEAST OUT , I DON'T EVEN HAVE ONE PENDING IN DOWNLOADS AT THE MOMENT , SO WHAT I NEED IS A SIMPLE LITTLE UNIT THAT WON'T BE A PROBLEM IF I WISH TO DELETE IT AFTER WARDS ! IF ANY ONE HAS A LINK TO SUCH AN ANIMAL PLEASE LET ME KNOW ! IN THE MEAN TIME I WILL HAVE A LOOK AROUND MYSELF ! CHEERS FOR NOW . SMALLSHIPS.

smallships, (cool username)

Windows Updates should use the installer service. I would just proceed as if everything is OK and see what happens during the next update cycle.

Just when you thought you were safe ? I have been waiting for a Windows Update or similar before confirming that Windows Installer is working or not ! I have had one Windows.Update. "Definition Update for Windows defender-KB915597" by all indications it seems to install it , but does not , it shows up as successful twice , but keeps requesting to install again and again , so far I have attempted to install it three times ? ............I had reason to use PAINT.NET 3.10 and it offered an update to PAINT NET. 3.36 which I proceeded to take them up on , it seemed to install but at the very end came up with the same old message about Windows Installer is not installed blah, blah ,blah, so much for that but now I don't seem to have PAINT. NET 3.10 either and of course I cannot re-install it because of the initial problem "Catch 22"
Woe is me ! PS. I tried a quick walk around the block , but the problem was still there when I got back ? Ciao Smallships.

Smallships,

KB915597 is the signature update for Windows Defender, and there may be updates daily. There is usually a version number associated with the update, either after the KB# or in the info for the update. I don't think I would worry about that. I'm short on time ATM. I'll reread the thread later tonight and get back.

HI MR. D.C.T. I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT THE THREE AND NOW TWO MORE DID HAVE THE SAME DEFINITION NUMBERS , AND WOULD YOU BELIEVE THIS ?????....."WINDOWS DEFENDER" HAS STOPPED WORKING AND WILL NOT RESTART
THE ERROR FOR THIS IS ....Error 0x80092003 plus 'Adobe' tried to update and will not because of the "Windows Installer' problem !
So I am about to seriously consider a full recovery ! [Please excuse the CAPS earlier, I had written to much before I realised !
....Thanks for your help to date ...Cheers Smallships.

Smallships,

You mention services.msc, were you in there disabling or changing anything? What started this? Is it possible you disabled a service that Windows Installer needs to function? How did you notice you first had a problem?

BTW, when you get to 100 posts we'll upgrade you to "Largeships"!

Well you can all relax , because unless 'Dave' says so no one is getting anything including me !
You see, I have used Vista's recovery and reverted back to 'Factory Fresh' , I realised I was using much to much time by all concerned , not that I was not satisfied ,rather overwhelmed by the attention ,and also very thankful !
I have in the past Re-formatted XP but never VISTA , as usual you do not realise just how much C**P you store even in a short while , and how many Docs. and Progs. are missing when you start your "New" computer for the first time so as some wise person once said , Lay back and think of Bill Gates and enjoy the ride , cos there is a lot of slogging ahead !
Once again , thanks to all the Team for their immediate response to my plight , actually I enjoyed the Forum whilst it lasted, it just goes to show, with so many people willing to spend time with others the Computer folk at large are safe to sleep at night ! Cheers All, Smallships. [ AKA humbleships] I think this Thread is at an end ?
