I'm having trouble with Media Center (Vista Home on a Dell Inspiron1520) cooperating with me.
Once I finally got the remote to recognize the set-top box, I thought I was doing great. However, I don't seem to have any audio when watching live TV. I do have audio when watching something recorded in the past (via co-ax). I've done all the checking to make sure nothing is muted or volume down too low to hear. I am with suddenlink (probably the problem right there-lol) and my set-top box is a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000. I don't know if y'all can help me, but it's worth giving it a shot, right?

BTW, I'm not home right now with the above mentioned happiness, but I'll keep an eye out for any replies and see what happens when I get home. Thanks!

OK, I'm not that familiar with the setup, but it sounds as though your video card (which is what captures the Live TV) is capturing sound, but your computer is not outputting it.

My best general advice is to check every setting of your video card software and see if anything mentions sound, anywhere. I'm guessing that the playback mechanism is passing sound through your system differently than the capture mechanism.

I wish I had more help for you. If I Think of any brainstorms, I'll be sure to let you know.

I'm going to take a different direction with my answer. I don't have Media Center (dangit!), but I'm guessing media center uses a different process for live and recorded TV.

Click the speaker (volume) icon in the task bar. A little window will open. Click Mixer at the bottom. You may have to do this while you are trying to watch live tv. See if one of the sliders is toward the bottom, or the mute icon is displayed under one slider. Unmute and/or move the slider toward the top!

Thanks y'all, but no dice. I might try my Dell Gold Support this evening after work. I always try to get things squared away on my own or with the help of support forums before I call them. Don't know why, I paid good money for that option (well, $89 for 3 years, not all that bad really). I'll report back if they get it fixed for me and tell you what it was in case there's another person with the same problem down the line.

I had an epiphany - maybe my connections were coming out of the wrong place on the set-top box...there's 3 after all and I can totally be a dumb blonde on occasion. Changed the output from Out 2-VCR to Out 1-TV and I've got everything now. I guess I was thinking about "recording" so I had VCR on the brain. Anyhow, just thought I'd followup in case this might help anybody else.
