ActiveX error message?

Hi All - This message is being generated via Windows Mail when opening an incoming email. The email is from an online store and so includes a lot of pictures, I've been receiving these emails for ages with no problems until this morning. Once I click on the 'OK' button the email displays without any problems.....so not a biggee, but a minor annoyance. I've not installed anything new (no updates either) nor changed anything....what is causing it and how can I banish it to oblivion.

Thanks,
JIM

Jim,

Last Tuesday's updates included one that added 5 ActiveX kill bits. Kill bits are just a bit that prevents certain ActiveX controls, that may present security issues to your computer, from running. If this started in the last week I would start looking there.

Thanks Dave - That update was installed here on 15th October, I get these emails daily so, as this just started this morning, I doubt that would be the reason. Is there any way to reverse the effect of the killbits or would that necessitate a system restore?

cheers....JIM

I'm not sure about the particulars of Windows Mail, but I believe it uses Internet Explorer security settings. You may be able to add the senders domain to the Trusted Sites zone of IE. This would allow it to run whatever ActiveX script is running (whether you want them to or not).

Thanks Ziggie - You are quite right....Windows mail does 'share' IE's security settings. What I don't understand is how I have been able to view these emails for yonks without any problems then, seemingly without any changes, all of a sudden I am getting this message.
I will add the site to the 'trusted' list and see if that does it.

thanks again,
JIM

It's possible they changed their message format to include new ActiveX controls.
Or you have spyware that changed some setting somewhere.

Or...

~shrug~ there's no way to know for sure without knowing how they put their email together and if they've made any changes to it.

Hey Zig - I didn't think of that (the sender changing the way the email is compiled)....sounds logical. Thanks for your help mate, as I said...only a minor annoyance and I reckon your theoretical explanation would be most likely.

thanks again all,
JIM
