Hi,
On my new laptop I saw that 2 of Windows update show as failed. Both are critical updates.
(All other updates are successfully installed)
1. Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2419640)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80080005
Update type: Important
2. Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2416400)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80246005
Update type: Important
I also tried downloading the setup for KB2416400 & installing it (after removing the previously installed update), but even then it is showing as Failed.
Appreciate further help as I could not find any solution.

I'll take the second one first, that's the easy one.
Error 80246005, according to [url=http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Update-error-80246005:1pqhzld5]Microsoft[/url:1pqhzld5], is caused by not being able to write to the Catroot2 directory. The link (click on Microsoft) will walk you through the best way to remedy that.
As for the second...I didn't see anything at first blush. I'll do some more digging later this weekend.
Hey Grr (and Zig) - On my Windows 7 64-bit system:
KB2416400 - Installed first time with no errors. It is a cumulative security update for IE8.
KB2419640 - Failed on my machine too. All I did was restart the machine and then try to download and install that update again; worked fine second time around. There are lots of reports across the net about this one failing, most have been successful after restarting and trying again.

No. From memory, there were four downloads in that group, including KB2419640, which all came via Windows Update. The other three installed fine but that one failed. I just re-started the machine and was almost immediately notified by Windows Update (via icon in system tray) that a new update was ready to download and install. Sure enough, when I checked, it was the same one that had failed. So I just went through the procedure with that one again and it installed OK.
The best way to check on installed updates is via [b:f3zedkx8]Control Panel>Programs and Features>View installed updates[/b:f3zedkx8]. You will find that option to "View installed updates" in the left hand panel of the Programs and Features screen.

I again restarted and tried updating, but no help. Still shows those 2 updates as failed.
Then I manually downloaded the exe file for the updates, and on installing it prompted - Update is installed.
However I was not able to locate these updates through:Control Panel>Programs and Features>View installed updates

Yep, it leaves you like a dog chasing its tail.
Have you tried changing the settings in Windows Update? Change it to...."Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and see what happens.
Only other suggestion would be to System Restore to a date before the updates were installed, change the aforementioned setting (in Windows Update) on reboot and see if they will install OK then.

If I do a system restore I have 2 re-install many applications.

KB2416400 update was installed on January-2 & since it was a new laptop I has installed almost everything...after that update. It was actually the 1st update on this new laptop..

Well I hate to tell you mate, I had a similar thing happen on my son's desktop..... with Vista SP1. I fresh installed Vista for him and after I installed SP1 I tried to install SP2 but it kept telling me I needed SP1 installed first. So I would go back and try to install SP1 again but it would then tell me I already had SP1 installed.....going round in circles. I ended up re-installing Vista all over again from scratch, it was the only way I could see to get around it.
Not saying you will have to do anything like that and I hope someone can come up with a better solution for you, but...........................

it was surprising to see that the manual exe for the updates prompted that the update is installed, but the Update History is not getting updated.

Jim, i couldn't c these 2 updates through view update history.
However I could see them listed under Installed updates..
