What email program is used in win7? How can I migrate my Outlook Express email address book and folders to the new email program?

Thanks,

David

I believe Windows Live Mail is the standard Email program used in Win 7, both 32 and 64 bit versions. Lots of people report having problems importing contacts from Outlook Express to Live Mail. Many end up sending their outlook express contacts to hotmail or gmail, as Live Mail will automatically import contacts from those services.

This probably isn't the most helpful advice, and hopefully Jim or Dave or Carol would know better how to overcome the obstacles many users seem to experience.

Hi David - Patrick is far too modest, he has proffered perfectly good advice.

Just one point for clarification: The methodology differs depending on circumstances - I am assuming you wish to export your address book from OE on one machine and then import into WLM on another different machine. Is that correct?

Cheers mate... Jim

Hi Mate:

Thanks for that. Yes, that is what I would like to do. I've migrated the ADDRESS BOOK to HOT MAIL, but I cannot figure out how to migrate the FOLDERS. I believe that I can then move them from HOT MAIL to WLM.

Is that correct?

David - You should be able to export/import your messages from OE to WLM direct.

Here is a guide: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Import-messages-into-Windows-Mail-from-Outlook-Express

It's not terribly difficult but get back to us if you have any problems.

I haven't a clue how you would export messages from OE to Hotmail, sorry.

Cheers mate... Jim

Sorry mate, I don't even know if there is a way to successfully export/import actual folders. You may have to recreate them in WLM. The messages can only be imported en masse, they cannot be exported/imported individually or separated into folders.

Your windows user identity number can be found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{your Windows user identity number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.

Here's some more reading which might help. Don't worry about the mention of Vista, I'm pretty sure it would be the same for Win7:

How many messages are we talking about David? This could be time consuming, depending on the number of messages, but you could: re-create the folders in 'My Documents' on XP. Then go to Outlook Express and 'save' the messages to those new folders in My Documents, and then transfer them on to a flash drive.

Sorry I can't be more help mate. Problems is - I haven't used either XP or OE for ages so I can't check first hand for you.

Cheers... Jim

Hi Mate:

I have seven different identity numbers. How do I tell which is the right one?

There are many folders. 🙁

And are all 7 identities associated with your username? If that's the case, I have no idea why or how there would be 7 different identities all for the one user. Perhaps because you have changed your email address 7 times during the time you've been using OE?

If all 7 identities are under your username then I think it would be safe to assume that any one of the seven would be okay.

Reasoning: Additional identities are generally setup in OE by the default user in order to separate email functionality between multiple users. This requires a new profile (identity) for each user under their own name. If multiple identities are setup under the same (one) username, then the emails will not be separated, so it shouldn't matter which identity you use.

That's the theory anyway mate.

Cheers... Jim

This is all very confusing to me. I've attached a picture of the IDENTITY folder.

Hi Jim:

This is all very connfusing to me.  I've tried uploading a picture of the identities to no avail. It doesn't seem to want to work for me.

David - Perhaps the screenshot is in a strange format, or it may be too big perhaps. Send it as an email attachment to my home email address mate.
