Reinstalled FF, no joy...

Thats because you more than likely are still using your old profile. It dosnt get deleted when you un-install FF.

Either start Firefox by pressing Shift and then clicking on the FF icon and then select Start Firefox in Safe Mode and check to see how the links are or create a new profile then load Firefox using the new profile WITHOUT any addons or extensions.

I know you are eager to get this fixed but by racing ahead, all you will manage to do is frustrate yourself.

Hi Terry - Alan is right. Uninstalling and re-installing Firefox will not fix a corrupted profile, profiles are kept and re-used (passed on).

Here is a link which shows how to create a new profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows

Creating a new profile fixed the website issues. However, I can't believe there is no option to "import bookmarks".

Additionally it appears that Lass Pass software is not functioning with the new profile.

bahhh humbug

Sorry Terry, my fault entirely. I should have warned you to backup (export) your bookmarks to a HTML file beforehand.

With Firefox in particular, the user Profile is critical because it holds all your settings, add-ons, bookmarks, etc.

Did you delete the old profile? If not, you can reload Firefox under the old profile, export your bookmarks, then load Firefox again under the new profile and import them.

  1. Open "Run" and type (or copy and paste) firefox.exe -P into the Run dialogue box. Then click OK
  2. If the old profile is still listed; click on it to highlight and then click Start Firefox
  3. Export you bookmarks to HTML and then close Firefox
  4. Go back and repeat step one
  5. Now highlight the new profile and click Start Firefox
  6. Import you bookmarks.

Apologies again mate,

Cheers... Jim

Jim,

Sorry to be a pain but I cannot find an option to export bookmarks.

I did keep the default user and that's what I am currently using. All of my bookmarks are still available.

I figured how to copy bookmarks. Addons were also copied but none of the extensions of which Last Pass is an option.

I receive the message that "firefox cannot modify the needed file" which prevents me from adding Extensions.

Yes, that's right mate... using a new profile takes you back to square one... you will need to re-install extensions, etc. Pretty much the only thing which is transferable is the bookmarks, because they do not require installation.

Glad to hear you kept the old profile and managed to transfer your bookmarks across.... good one!!

If you want to copy the bookmarks etc from one profile to another log onto to the profile you want to copy from, in your case the corrupted profile. Export your bookmarks to the desktop.

Log out then back on with the new profile.

Import the bookmarks from the desktop into your new profile.

OK, FORGET THIS.

Just been back and re-read that you figured it out.

I think the point you are missing is that it is a possibility that one of your addons or extensions caused the initial problem. Once you have exported your bookmarks, which you have done, then I would forget about the old profile and start again.

You can visit the LastPass site and re-download the extension from there (I have done it a few times). Then you could download and install your addons one by one testing your browser along the way. If you dont you could be right back where you started.

Did try starting Firefox in Safe mode as per previous suggestion? I have a sneaky feeling had you had done so then you would narrowed the problem down sooner without the need to export/import and re-install things.

All addons are disabled. No extensions are enabled. Firefox is in Safe Mode.

Same message:  "firefox cannot modify the needed file" which prevents me from adding Extensions.

I have reloaded LastPass password manager but it does activate when needing a password.

With this version of Firefox, did you give your profile a name or did you use the default set of random letters?

If you named your profile how many letters long is it?

Is this happening with all extensions or just one, if its just one which one?

hello All,

It's been a while.....I bought a fancy SSD and did a clean install. Everything was backed up previously. This time I installed about 1/5th of the programs as previously. Evertyhing is working great. I'll do a system image backup in a few days.

I really appreciate all of the help from everyone here @ DCT

Thank you

Terry
