Leaving Vista behind

Just a few thoughts on the migration to Windows 7. I moved on to Windows 7 and so far it has been a pleasant surprise. The speed of the OS is impressive, the ease of installation - painless and from a "novice" view - not a reinvention of the wheel. I received the program as a Christmas gift and resisted the urge to put it into operation that day. I sought wise counsel (this forum) and glad I did. Preparation was the key. Before installing, I made sure I had backups of address books/contact files, favorites, anything I felt I could not afford to loose. This proved to be a very wise move. I chose the clean install option instead of just an upgrade. I didn't want to leave fragmented files behind to have them return to haunt me later.
Installation was painless -- took approximately 45 minutes. Upon completion I was able to import all files I had backed up with the exception of one. That happened to be the wife's email. To my relief, that is where the value of the windows.old folder came in very handy. I was able to search it - looking for .pst files and found 2. Imported them back to her inbox and problem solved. I plan to go over the windows.old folder very thoroughly before deleting it and regaining the huge amount of space it takes up.
I also moved on to Office 2007 from 2003 and the use of Outlook 2007 was a quantum leap. Previously under the Vista - Outlook 03 reign, I was not able to download the Dallas Mavericks schedule. I could get the file to the desktop but the window to indicate where to place it always came up blank with no choices. Thankfully, that did not happen with Win 7 - Outlook 07. Download went smoothly and export to my Blackberry went off without any problem. Now if I can get this new operation to support my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse --- all will be well. My previous problem under Vista was the keyboard-mouse would work but when you went to use a keyboard shortcut to switch users, the screen locked up and you had to reboot. I certainly hope this new setup will support this.
I have only just begun to explore Win 7 but am favorably impressed with what I have seen so far.

The saga continues. I just finished hooking up the wireless keyboard and mouse. Both are Logitech products. Laser 3200 series. Downloaded new installation software version 4.80.2. Installation ran smoothly and both devices work just fine with Win 7. Then came the big test - would it allow me to switch users using the keyboard shortcut or the old way of start-shut down-switch user. Tried the shortcut way first and got the old screen lock up when the choice of users page came up. You could mouse over to the new user but mouse button pressing achieved nothing. Had to reboot. Tried the experiment again using the start - shut down path -- result the same. Ran a compatibility program from the Logitech software and it reinstalled the program compatible with Win XP SP2.
Went back and took a different approach - used the keyboard shortcut method and when the choice of user came up, I moused over the icon of the other user and hit the Enter key. Presto --- change to other user accomplished. Now, I don't know if the compatibility change made a difference, the sensitivity of the wireless mouse changed or what, but regardless I can now do what I want using a wireless keyboard and do not have to go back to using USB plug in devices. Hopefully this will be of assistance to others who may experience a similar situation.

Seriously, glad it worked out for you. It's a great OS, and half the fun is learning the 'new' stuff!

Update: When you get through with configuring Windows 7 and have all your files in the place you want them, it is a good idea to get rid of the windows.old file. Mine was 46 G. in size and taking up space I could use in other projects. I also installed a 1 T. Western Digital exteral HD for my weekly backups. It works well and was a good buy at Fry's.

Glad to hear all is going well!

I love Fry's. It's like a toy store for adult men!
