Incomplete System Restore...

Running a desktop PC with MSWin7 Pro.

Tried to do SYSTEM RESTORE to a couple of different restore point dates (vs system image restore) with goal of correcting a problem am experiencing with a music server app. Get message that

"System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer system files and settings were not changed. System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x8000ffff)"

System boots fine and seems to operate normally so not sure what is going on.

Thought about un/re-inststalling music app assuming IT IS the cause but need to correct problem beforehand.

Doing online search for the "0x8000ffff" error and incomplete restore resulted in MS articles (ID# 2695585 and ID# 2709289) which talk about a "hot fix" but got lost in the how-to instructions.

Assistance graciously accepted.

Hi WB,

I'm not surprised you got lost in the hot-fix instructions, I did too!! That is a pretty complex set of instructions and I'm far from convinced it will fix your issue anyway. This type of error can be caused by any number of things.

Have you tried running System Restore from within Safe Mode?

Are you certain the computer is not infected with malware, have you run scans?

Let's try this first; please run Windows System File Checker Tool:

Open a command prompt (run as administrator) and type in sfc /scannow, then press Enter.

It will take a while to complete but at the end it will let you know if there are any file corruptions and if they were fixed. Please let us know what the final message says.

Cheers... Jim

Thanks, Jim.
Re your follow up questions:
(1) System Restore not done in Safe Mode, only normal operating mode;
(2) No issues found running Malwarebytes, Spybot and MS Security Essentials which I just did when this issue arose and do religiously each week;
(3) Had to Google on running Safe Mode with Command Prompt since only done Safe Mode a couple of times in 20+ years but ran "sfc/scannow" and got a message that no issues were found (or something to that effect) - would have been nice if I could have saved a screenshot of the actual message but could not figure out how since had to reboot(?) to get back to Standard Mode;

Frank

Did you end up trying to run System Restore in Safe Mode?

Try this:

Open a Run command (press Windows + R keys simultaneously), type msconfig into the Run dialogue box, and then press Enter.

Under the "General" tab, enable the 'Selective startup' option and deselect 'Load startup items'.

Now, under the "Services" tab, enable the 'Hide all Microsoft services' option and then click the Disable all button.

Finally, click Apply then OK and when prompted restart the computer.

Now try System Restore again and see if it works okay.

(don't forget to take a note of the original settings and revert back after completion)

Tnx for your continuing assistance, Jim!
Will note original settings as suggested...already pretty religious about this anyway. I find screen shots have been a convenient way to have a visual record on which to make notes.
Also, will create a Restore Point prior to making changes.
