I have a few problems, one is trouble accessing some of my music files and photos. they were input and edited on three different pc's passed thru on 3 different external

harddrives. Each PC had different usernames.

Now when I try to view some of them I find They cant be viewed, etc.

It's been quite a hassle. I found Dave's site and downloaded the Take-Ownership registry file.

when I run it i get message "The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor."

I need help if i'm doing something wrong.

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum!!

Did you change the file extension of the registry file? You have to manually change the file extension from .txt to .reg

Let us know,

Cheers... Jim

Yes I changed the name to "take_ownership.reg". the icon imaged changed when I did it.

I also did a system backup.

the first step showed a warning to procede saying the code had no publisher/digital signiture, this did show it was a registration entry.

while typing this response I tryed to run it again.

Now its running more than 30 minutes, I may have  hit run  twice?

I'll let it run while I am out and will cancel it when I get back later.

I can always restore, if the registry got messed up.

 Thanks, Bill

What is your operating system?

Have you had other problems with this computer? - I ask this because if I am reading your post correct, it shouldnt take 15 minutes to run a reg script.

Can the files be opened and edited on your other machines?

What happens if you right click on a picture file (one you cannot open) and select 'Open With' then choose Paint?

Hey Bill - Alan is correct, a reg script should only take a few seconds to process.

Please answer Alan's questions and we'll take it from there mate.

Cheers... Jim

Hi Alan,

How are things in Sweden?

My operating system is windows 7.

Because you asked, the PC has three problem areas I would love help with.

1. The problem of not having permission/ownership of many of my files. I never really understood how ownership worked thinking I am main user(administrator) and should control all input.

2. PC not accepting my external drives, real problem drives me crazy.

3. Black screen "Windows Boot Manager" shows options on starting and restarts in x seconds.

My computer gave me trouble when I came down to Florida and I tried to connect a backup harddrive from

New Jersey. I have three backup drives, one is fairly new Seagate 1 TB, the other two are harddrives from prior discarded PC's.

The Seagate and 1 of the others were not excepted automatically. One not at all, the other did give an error message. I reinstalled the drivers to no avail. The last harddrive worked fine.

The computer also starts with a black boot screen, only an small bother.

I cant try to right click a file and open in paint as I think I was able to fix the hundreds of problems manually in properties.

Thanks, Bill

Hello Bill,
Sweden is a little chilly at the moment but getting better.
From what you have written, we need to concentrate on getting your machine running properly before we work on file associations (it would seem that associations is a contender).
You would normally only need to take ownership of files that are locked down by windows - i.e. system files etc. This isnt normal for an image or a text file unless you or someone has protected the file.

Unplug any external drives you have then start your machine.

If you still see the black boot screen with the various options choose Start in Safe Mode.
Once it has loaded click on Start then in the searchbox type CMD.
Right click on CMD and choose to run it as Administrator.
Type in sfc /scannow and press Enter. There is a space between the c and the /.
Allow that to run, you may need your Win 7 installation disc to hand and this could take a while, be patient.
Once all is done, restart into normal mode. Does the machine start properly now?

Hello Alan,

I tried the procedure you suggested, it was something new for me. The process lasted about 5 minutes and ended with completion message "did not find any violations". It didn't require the installation disk.

Nothing was changed and I still get the black boot screen.

I had been thinking there was an option to do a system repair from the installation disk, but I couldn't find that available with Windows 7. Your procedure may have been that type of process?

Do you have any other suggestions?

At this point I am considering re-installing Windows 7 to clear this and hopefully resolve the inability to access my external harddrives. Of cause that would be a drastic step.

Thanks again

Here is a very detailed explanation on how to perform a Win 7 repair install. Let us know how it works out as we are running out of options.

Sorry, I didn't get back to this problem earlier. I finally did a full win 7 re-install from scratch and all problems were corrected. No more black screen, have complete access to my external hard drives.

I now have the new problem of my email being hacked.

I must have walked under a ladder or stepped on a crack.
