when trying to get into...... http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=ab-copd
I can get on my PC with VISTA Home Premium and have no problem getting into the
web page that Wn 7 pops up giving the above message. Can click "try Again" many times, but doesn't let me in. Tried doing restore before this started which was about 2 weeks ago but didn't work.
I have tried several forums but no help or problem solving offered. The web page people have been contacted and many of them are having this problem.
None of the browsers Firefox, Chrome or IE will work on laptop Wn 7 64 bit.
Will appreciate your help to clear this problem.

Hi, and welcome to the DCT forum.
This is just a preliminary reply to let you know that we are here and listening.
Just tried accessing the site you linked to in FF and IE, in both Windows 8 and Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit)... all accessed the site just fine. Unfortunately, my Win7 Home Premium 64-bit system is in at the repairers at the moment, so I'm unable to exactly replicate your circumstances.
Have you tried the following common suggestions:
- Clear cache and cookies?
- In Firefox: Access about:config and edit the network.http.accept-encoding entry?
What about security software; are you utilizing a 3rd party firewall? Is your security setup the same on both the Vista and Win7 machines?
If you require further help regarding the above steps, please let us know.
Cheers... Jim
Jim and Alan, thanks for your replies.
Jim, I've cleared my cache and cookies, but don't understand how to edit the....
- In Firefox: Access about:config and edit the network.http.accept-encoding entry?
Under Status=default; under Type=string; and under Value=gzip,deflate
How does this look ? and if need to edit, please instruct me. I'm running IE 9 on PC and laptop.
Have AVG, CCleaner, SpeedyPC Pro, SpybotSearch&Destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-malware
on PC & laptop. This does seem like a lot, don't run them at same time. What you think..got to many?
Alan, changed the options you show and didn't help this problem.
Again, thanks to both of you for your help. Bob

Bob,
If you're running IE9 on both machines, you don't need to edit about:config. In fact you can't, that feature is specific to Firefox. And if you can't access the web page from any of the browsers you mentioned then I suspect that editing about:config in Firefox is probably not going to help.
Is that the free version of AVG Bob? And is it the exact same version on both machines?
No, I don't think you've got too many security programs. Although, I am not too sure about SpeedyPC Pro. I'd never heard of it but a quick check around the net reveals that it has less then a stellar reputation. In fact, WOT rates the SpeedyPC Pro site RED (High Risk).
Have you scanned your Win7 machine with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. If not, then I would be running a full/thorough scan immediately. Get back to us with the result.
If the MBAM scan result comes back all clear, please try a couple of things... in this order:
- Temporarily disable all your security software which includes real time protection - AVG and Spybot. Not sure about SpeedyPC Pro but, being a system cleaner/optimization tool, I doubt it would include any real time protection. If SpeedyPC Pro displays an icon in the System Tray, I'd disable it (or 'Quit') anyway. Then see if you can access the site.
- Run Firefox with all add-ons disabled: click on Help and from the drop down menu select "Restart with add-ons disabled". Then see if you can access the site.
- Run IE9 with all add-ons disabled: Type Internet Explorer into the Start search box and from the list of results, click on "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). Or, go to Start>All programs>Accessories>System Tools and click on "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)". Then see if you can access the site.
My main concern at the moment is AVG, and any sort of included Web shield/filter feature in particular.
Let us know how you get on please Bob. If we can't resolve this soon, I'll contact Dave and see what he can come up with. (he's pretty busy at the moment).
Cheers... Jim
Jim, I am running IE 9 on both machines. I had AVG free edition 2013 on both machines, deleted it yesterday on laptop because you and Dave did not recommended it. I downloaded and ran "Slim Cleaner" which I really like.
Ran full scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and found one problem.......
"PUP.mywebsearch....Registry Data.....HKCU\software\microsoft\IE\main\start page (PUP.mywebsearch).....BAD:(http://home.mysearch.....blah,blah,blah..on and on stuff"
I deleted this "My websearch" but still didn't help.
I tried doing paragraphs 1, 2, 3 above, and nothing changed the problem !!!
Ran several options in Slim Cleaner hoping for correcting the problem but no luck.
I did not delete AVG on PC with Vista....left everything the same and PC gets me in.
I'm not a high-tech by any means, but seems after all these trials, it's got to be in Wn 7 64 bit somewhere.
Many thanks for your time and help. Bob

You could be right about the 64-bit thing Bob but I personally think it's unlikely. I haven't got my Win7 64-bit machine back from the repairers yet so still unable to ascertain for absolute certain.
However, these types of issues are generally associated with either the browser, the site, or the ISP.
Let's try something else:
- Open Internet Explorer and press the Alt key to display the menu.
- Click on View, move you mouse cursor over Encoding in the drop down menu and you should now see your Encoding settings; should be set to Unicode (UTF-8).
- If that is not the case, change it so Unicode (UTF-8) is selected and see if you can now access the site.
- If already selected, change it to Auto-Select and then see if you can access the site.
You could also try re-setting IE back to default; PLEASE BE AWARE that this step will also disable any installed add-ons, plug-ins, or toolbars. If you want to use any of those add-ons in the future, they will need to be reinstalled.
- Open Internet Explorer and press the Alt key to bring up the menu.
- Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.
- Try accessing the site.
If still no joy, I'll definitely give Dave a nudge and see what he can come up with.
Cheers mate... Jim
Alan, tried your instructions but didn't get in.
Jim, tried both of your instructions but didn't work. By the way, when I "press on the Alt key" nothing happens, so I go to my tool bar and click on "View" and get to the Encoding settings and followed your instructions. Is this path that I used OK? Anyway, didn't work. For what it's worth, I've been jumping back and forth between PC and laptop checking settings and PC has pretty much same as laptop......The following is what IE 9 shows as error.....
....and Google shows this.....
Guess I've about used my space. Good nite and wish you better breathing. Bob

Bob,
If the laptop is connected wirelessly can you connect it directly to your modem/router with a cable? If you can do so then disable the wireless on your laptop (once it is connected via wire) and try the site again. Let me know the results.
Also, did you completely uninstall AVG, or did you just disable it?
Hello Dave, sorry to take so long to respond....had some "honey-do's" to get done...you know how that goes.
I unplugged the phone line and power going into the modem to let it get "Unconstipated" I call it. DSL man told me to do this occasionally. Plugged phone line and power back into modem, took the Earthnet cable from back of wireless and plugged directly into laptop which by-passed the wireless.
Forum of COPD still would not let me in !!!!
For AVG, I completely uninstalled it, AVG toolbar and some other type of AVG Security thing. Everything that AVG showing was uninstalled.
I certainly appreciate your help on this problem. Bob
There are several reasons for this including improper server configuration and using a proxy to connect to the internet.
I've seen errors like this when web servers are misconfigured to double compress content, but that would be an error which would affect most everyone.
I doubt you use a proxy intentionally, but it is possible your security software has installed a proxy to monitor your internet traffic for malware and such. It's also possible that your uninstallation of AVG may have some leftovers in the network stack and/or browsers.
If you go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center there should be an option (in the left pane) to Change Adapter Settings. If you open that it should display the network connections available to the computer. Ideally you want two - one for the wireless connection and one for the wired connection. Verify that for me and we'll go from there.
Also can you open firefox and click on the Orange Firefox button and then Addons. Choose extensions on the left and let us know what appears in the list on the right.
Dave, Jim and Alan, Since I deleted AVG, thought I'd Google search for a free real-time anti virus and and ran across the following.....
Downloaded the Comodo firewall and five other programs/buttons came with it ......
I ran the Virtual Comodo and Comodo Dragon and each of them let me get into COPD forum and let me log-in !!!!! My defalut is Yahoo.com email and there was only the address bar and no other crazy stuff flipping around the page...seems everything else was shut down. Now, strangely, when first boot-up or wake up my computer, Firefox will let me get to COPD forum page, let me log-in, then next time will not let me log-in...weird !!! The Virtual Comodo and Comodo Dragon constantly let me open the page and log-in.
If you see no problem with the Comodo programs, then I'll use them on my laptop and consider my problem closed and thanks to each one for their time, efforts and trouble to help me. Bob
