I have an HP laptop Pavilion and when I click on "computer" in the start menu, I see four disks listed. They are Local Disk (C), Recovery (D), HP TOOLS (E), and Local disk (Q). I understand Local Disk (C), but what are the others for? Thanks.

Recovery (D): is a special partition which is used to help restore (or recover) a broken system. You should never use 'D' for anything else, such as to save files.
HP TOOLS (E): contains a number of HP diagnostic and maintenance tools.
Local Disk (Q): Is a part of the 'click n run' version of Office 2010.
Hope that helps,
Cheers... Jim
